Hi, I'm Sagan, and I will be critiquing your work today. I hope you've been keeping up with your 50% rule while waiting! Without further ado, shall we start?

Lines

  • Superimposed Lines: There are fraying on both sides, that is caused by not starting your line on the dot. Take your time with each lines, and don't rush.

  • Ghosted Lines: Confident lines, nice job!

  • Ghosted Planes: I see some wobble here and there, but majority of them is nice. Just as a remainder, don't forget confidence beats accurate! Confident but inaccurate line > Accurate but wobbly line

Ellipses

  • Tables of Ellipses: You have not followed the instructions of this exercise. Ellipses need to have two borders that encase them, to check their accuracy, but a lot of ellipses "float" on the page without any targets. Also try to keep ellipses in the similar row in similar orientation as much as possible. I want you to re-consume the material again and follow the instructions. You may check out ScyllaStew's video

  • Ellipses in Ghosted Planes: They are a bit rough and egg-shaped, but they are confident, and it's nothing some practice with warmups can't fix

  • Funnels: You did two pages of funnels, instead of one :p I assume it's a mistake, and won't count it as grinding. Ellipses are not touching most of the time, but I assume it is an accuracy issue and will sort itself out with warmups. Try to plan in a solid way, try to keep the ellipses more snug, refresh the material and you may also want to check out ScyllaStew's video on that exercise too.

Boxes

  • Planned Perspective: Nothing to add here

  • Rough Perspective: I see repeated lines! In DrawABox, you are not allowed to "fix" lines, you only have one shot at a line, and if you miss it, tough luck. This will force you to have a better planning phase, be mindful when ghosting, and will help your accuracy in the long run. Try to ghost more throughly when going towards the vanishing point, that may prove helpful. I also noticed your line confidence took a big hit, remember, confidence beats accuracy! Confident but inaccurate line > Accurate but wobbly line. You may watch ScyllaStew's video on this topic, too :p

  • Rotated Boxes: You have an eye for rotations! Solid job. Altough you are missing the four corner boxes. I want you to draw finish them and send it to me (Not a re-do, just finish the remaining boxes)

  • Organic Boxes: I notice approx. the quarter of boxes extended the wrong way. Boxes are generally the same size. You are leaning more towards the dramatic foreshortening. Also I'm not sure hatching was applied with ghosting method. This may constitute a re-do, but I'm not gonna reassign this again, as I believe with 250 Boxes Challenge instructions, you will understand and get better with organic boxes too. I HIGHLY recommend reconsuming the material/ScyllaStew's videos before attempting Organic Boxes for warmup.

Next Steps:

I request:

  • 1 page of Tables of Ellipses

  • Add the missing boxes on your existing Rotated Boxes

I don't expect perfect, or not even a good work, just one that follows the instructions. You will post the first page you do, no practice pages, no grinding. I'll be waiting here for your reply so you can start your box challenge :)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi, Sagan. Thank you for reviewing my work and giving such a detailed critique. It really means a lot!

Here is your requested pages of ellipses and missing boxes: https://imgur.com/a/DQZCq8Y . Also i will follow your recommendations about reconsuming some of the material and watch videos where i struggle and fix it through daily warmups.

Some of my impressions and thoughts about exercises:

  • Really struggle with simple lines for the first time, because i never used a fineliner before and my old habits start to kick in like working only with my hand or elbow or having no patience to apply ghosting enough.

  • My ellipses tend to be bumpy and wobby most of the time and i REALLY struggle with accuracy: to make ellipse right shape and size. But i think it is a matter of some warmups.

  • My struggle with boxes comes from lines i think. Especially you can see it on rotated boxes. Because i make my lines overshot, they start to disturb my sight on the boxes especially the further ones. So i missed the corner boxes :x

  • I do this reply a few weeks after i posted my homework and with daily warmups this really starts to shine and i get comfortable with new understanding of working with lines and other stuff.

Again thank you and looking forward 250 box challenge :>

Solid job, tables of ellipses will get better with time, you are on the right track.

As with your impressions, I think it all boils down to your perception of the work here. If you perceive them as exercises, instead of an artwork, you will always grow with each mistake, instead of beating yourself over with them. Am I struggling? That's right I am, this is something I'm learning actively, so it's okay. Am I making bad ellipses? Of course I am, but I am making these bad ellipses so my future ellipses look much better.

As about the 250 Box Challenge:

Next Steps:

I give greenlight to 250 Boxes Challenge.

Add these exercises to your warmup pool and don't forget about your %50 rule (I will advise if you haven't followed it, you should go ahead and pay your 50% play debt before the challenge)

Have fun!!!

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
