Hi there I'll be handling your lesson 2 critique.

You're making good progress towards understanding the concepts introduced in this lesson, below I'll be listing some things that will hopefully help you in your future attempts at these exercises.

  • Your arrows are off to a good start they're flowing smoothly and confidently. No major complaints here, there are a few spots where you widen or narrow a bit suddenly but when it occurs it's very minor and will improve with more mileage. One thing I'd like you to experiment more with is foreshortening. You make good use of it in the arrows themselves but you don't always utilize it in the negative space between the arrow's curves, as you can see demonstrated here we can create a much stronger illusion of an object moving through 3D space by using it in both of these areas together.

  • You're doing a good job keeping your organic forms with contours simple, plenty of people end up going a bit too complex when they reach this section. There is a few little moments of stiffness in your forms and contours which results in a bit of squaring occurring but as long as you remember to draw confidently this will disappear pretty quickly. One thing I'd like you to work on is shifting the degree of your contours. The degree of a contour line basically represents the orientation of that cross-section in space, relative to the viewer, and as we slide along the sausage form, the cross section is either going to open up (allowing us to see more of it) or turn away from the viewer (allowing us to see less), as shown here.

  • In the texture exercises you're focusing largely on outlines and negative space rather than cast shadows created by forms along the texture itself. This makes it difficult to create gradients with implied information which we could then use to create focal points in more complex pieces, by doing so we can prevent our viewers from being visually overwhelmed with too much detail. For more on the importance of focusing on cast shadows read here. I'd also like to quickly direct you to this image which shows that when we're working with thin line like textures if we outline and fill the shadow we will create a much more dynamic texture than simply drawing lines.

  • If you feel like you don't fully grasp form intersections just yet don't worry, you're on the right track but right now this exercise is just meant to get students to start thinking about how their forms relate to one another in 3D space, and how to define those relationships on the page. We'll be going over them more in the upcoming lessons. The majority of your forms here are looking solid and like they belong in a single cohesive 3D space, there are a few that look like they could use a bit more time in the planning stage to make sure they converge consistently however. Just remember that we want to be giving each line the same amount of time in the ghosting stage before drawing them confidently whether our goal is to create 1 form or 100.

  • These are some solid attempts at the organic intersections exercise but I have two suggestions that should help you achieve better results in your future attempts. The first is that I'd like you to draw through all of your forms when doing this exercise, currently your forms flatten out a bit and appear stiff but by drawing through your forms you'll be less inclined to worry about accuracy as well as develop a better understanding of how the forms rest in 3D space. Your shadows aren't behaving as if they have a consistent light source currently and some of them appear to hug the form creating them rather than cast on to the form/ground below. I'd suggest pushing your light source to the top left or right corner of the page as it's a bit easier to work with then a light that's directly above the form pile. This is a great exercise to experiment with in order to become more comfortable with organic forms as well as light and shadow before moving on to more complex pieces so definitely practice it in your warm ups from time to time.

Overall this was a really solid submission, you have some things to work on but I have no doubt you'll improve with more mileage. I'll be marking your submission as complete and moving you on to the next lesson.

Keep practicing previous exercises as warm ups and good luck in lesson 3!
