hi there, William,

i'll be the one looking over your submission and hopefully i'll be able to provide a helpful but on-point critique. before going i have a question, since i have a bit of a confusion, have you done these exercises on a pencil or a pen? if ever that you have done it on a pen then that's great and I apologize for the misunderstanding as the lines are somewhat faint and gives off a pencil look.

starting off with the lines section:

  • for the superimposed line, you've done a great job here since there is only one end that's fraying, it's also smoothly and confidently marked, and I can also see that you've experimented with different line sizes as well as adding some variations like curvy or wavy lines.

  • for the ghosted lines exercise, there are subtle c curved and s curved lines in some of your lines, and i've also seen that you were slightly hesitating in the other lines that you've marked, in this case for the s curved lines, one thing that you could do is for you to change the height of your chair or table so that your whole arm gives off a 90 degree angle and maintain a straight posture, this in some students works well in some cases. Another thing that you could do is to experiment with different speeds of ghosting. I recommend you to do this in your warm-ups whenever ghosting a box, ellipse or a line so that you can find the speed that you're most comfortable and accurate with while not sacrificing the confidence of the mark.

  • for the ghosted planes, the hesistation is still there but it's minimal

next up is the ellipse section:

  • starting off with the table of ellipses, it seems like for the two pages you've drawn them in a single page by some reason it's a bit of a mess and it overlapping the ellipses to one another isn't what was instructed, but i've seen the other picture which i assume is your first page where the ellipses are all just touching each other and smoothly as well as confidently done, and it seems that you understand the concept behind this exercise but i'll be asking one seperate page on a new piece of paper from you just because of the overlaps that you did.

  • for the ghosted planes with ellipses exercise, nothing to point here since in general you've done a great job.

  • for the funnel exercise, i've seen you do the harder variation which is applying a wider degree as it goes outward the funnel while maintaining the confidence in your ellipses, this is great but i have one thing to point out, it's great that you drew big since it helps activate the whole arm better when markmaking but its better to not add too much of it and if ever your going to fit everything in the page try not to overlap them to one another so that it doesn't get cluttered and it's easier for the critic to assess their judgement in the work that you've done, although it's still distinguishable to a certain degree, it wouldn't be the case for the upcoming exercises like for lesson 2 textures.

lastly is the boxes section,

  • for the plotted perspective exercise, i can't stress how important instructions are and so i'll be asking you to do two more panels, not two pages, two panels, like the one that you did in your organic perspective exercise, and so another thing to point out is that for the hatching, if you've read the lesson material https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/15/step8, you shouldn't do it sloppily, although it is optional it says here in the page to do it neat and tidy, which means that you should maintain a consistent, parallel and tight hatching lines.

  • next up is the rough perspective exercise, the marks in this lessons is not as confident as the previous exercises that you've done but it's great to see that you've followed the instructions here, one issue that i found is that you seem to repeat a line or add another line on top of another, not as line weight but to correct it. here in drawabox it's best if you don't hide the mistake or try to correct it since it either hides it completely or makes it completely noticeable, and so instead of that we try to work with our mistakes.

  • rotated boxes exercise, it's instructed that you should only do one rotated boxes exercise not 2 in 1 page, this is considered grinding and you shouldn't do more than what was instructed unless ask for revisions by the critic, since grinding limits the progress of one person and it also waste time by repeatedly doing one thing till perfection that will never arrive, although you'll get good at it, you'd just be stuck in that single exercise if you keep on grinding it. note that this entire course would take atleast months or even years to finish so you'd get a lot of mileage from the warmups and exercise after this lesson. for the exercise itself, it's a good attempt, when adding lineweight try to add it to the rest of the boxes so that it wouldn't look like you repeated a line, you also did a great job with the narrow and consistent gaps between the boxes.

  • final is the organic persective, the depth is noticeable in the drawing that you did but one minor thing to point out besides the repeating line is that you didn't draw the box entirely whenever it's overlapping https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/18/step5 like the step shown here, you can see that even though they are overlapping, the boxes are still drawn completely.

overall this is a very solid submission, although mistakes were made i feel like you're ready with the 250 box challenge, but i can't stress how important instructions are since it gives us order so i'll be asking you to do 1 page of the table of ellipses exercise and 1 page of 2 panels of the plotted perspective exercise. if ever you have questions or confused about certain things, feel free to ask it here and i'll try to answer it.

Next Steps:

1 page of the table of ellipses exercise

1 page of 2 panels of the plotted perspective exercise

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Here's answers to your questions: " i have a question, since i have a bit of a confusion, have you done these exercises on a pencil or a pen?" - I had done them using a tablet with pen like brush (although reckon should've used ink&paper which I did with 250 boxes submission.

  • Superimposed lines: Yes! noticed that lines where fraying the faster / slower I drew a line hence had to find a middle point in terms of speed to gain more control.

  • Ghosted planes: I believe that having dots not too far apart from each other allows more control although speed seems always the key to avoid missing a dot.

  • Funnel exercise: Understood!

Ellipses section

  • Table of ellipses: Will do so... find the exercise link below

  • Ghosted planes: Thank you!

Boxes exercises

  • Plotted perspective: Understood! find the exercise link below

  • Rough perspective: I constantly and subconsciously try to correct by making another pass over it, I reckon this is something to work on.

  • Rotated boxes: Understood! I found myself having momentum hence I wanted to do one more but will invest this energy in the 50/50 rule instead.

  • Organic perspective: You're right! Must've missed that important fact, but have made myself conscious about it and will keep doing so all the time from now on.

Here's the link to both exercises https://imgur.com/a/s9peVf0

I'll look forward to your feedback.

for the table of ellipses compared to your first work is much better, there's still some overlapping going on, so just keep in mind that you should just keep it touching each other.

for the plotted perspective, nothing to say, great work!

i'll be completing this submission now, good luck with the future lessons

Next Steps:

move on-to 250 box challenge

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete. In order for the student to receive their completion badge, this critique will need 2 agreements from other members of the community.

Yes, I admit that those ellipses are a bit hard as there should be a balance between speed and the hand movement. I'm still trying to find the sweet spot to get the most out of it.

Now, having done the 250 box challenge, should I wait for critique? would you mind advising further?

Cheers,

Hi there,

Thank you very much for your feedback! I sure will follow your recommendations and submit those promptly.

1 page of table of ellipses and 1 page of 2 panels of plotted perspective.

I thing that comes to mind is whether if there's a problem with me using digital medium for the exercises? I have done my best no to fall in Ctrl+Z loop to correct myself, instead to try and make lines as smoothly as I can.

Thank you again, and I'll be posting this soon as well as 250 boxes exercise.

Hi, if you haven't read this article yet please do: https://drawabox.com/article/ink/notdigital

if you have read it then i won't be pushing it since you're aware. in this article it mainly talks why pen is the medium that's highly recommended and much more effective rather than digital or the pencil medium.

Also one thing to point out is that you shouldn't go to another lesson without the previous lesson being critiqued and completed because you might miss out important notes or points which could be helpful throughout your journey, to speedup the process of getting a critique you can check out the pinned message in the discord #critique-exchange channel. one thing that you could do while waiting is to do the 50/50 rule.

hope you have a nice day!

I sure will! Just finished the 250 box challenge and post it for review. https://imgur.com/a/SjSAnjK

I'd appreciate the feedback. Will also do the 50/50 rule.

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
