250 Box Challenge
9:14 AM, Thursday February 23rd 2023
Thanks for taking the time out to review my work.
After months of hard work I'm finally through with this challenge.
Hello CharlesNArt, I will be critiquing your work! I will use Elodin's guide as well as add my own observations!
Extended Lines
There's little to few instances of wrongly extended lines like box Box 111, which confused me a bit. It looks as if you're extending from the inner Y corner if that makes sense, I don't know if it was intended but it looks wrongly extended. Same with Box 133. But for the most part you understand how to extend your lines which is great!
Divergence and Parallel Lines
Sometimes you had some lines that either parallel or diverge... as was the case with the page with boxes 128 - 133. The inner corner, as expected, causes the most issue when it comes to diverging and parallel lines. Box 138 also looks as if it was extended in pairs on one side.
For the most part though, you have a good understanding that all lines must converge to a single vanishing point for each side. Even in your earlier pages, I can tell that you understand that all lines must converge. Well done!
Hatching Lines
You're hatching lines are well done! I can tell you took your time ghosting and executing them.
Lineweight
Not much to be said here. You understand that you must add lineweight outside the box! Again, good job.
Wobbly and Repeating Lines
You have your occasional wobbly line like in Box 32. But most of your lines are decently smooth and confident! Great job! Remember to take your time with ghosting your lines until you get a solid idea of how you want your line to turn out!
Similar Orientations with Boxes
Your earlier pages display a decent variety of boxes even as I scrolled down to look at your later pages. However, you begin to draw smaller at Box 146 up until 250. While it's good to practice smaller boxes, don't forget to practice bigger ones too.
The next time you do another challenge like this(which would be the cylinder challenge I think), be sure to stop and reflect on your older pages to see if your box variety has changed or not. That's what helped for me at least.
Inner Corner
As I said before, this tricky corner will often be the one that throws off your box. What helps is if you think about the angle relationships between all 4 lines as explained here in this diagram: https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh(It takes a while to understand but if you read it from time to time you'll get it eventually.)
You can also change the order in which you draw the box in this tutorial: https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh
I hope this helped! Feel free to reply or ask questions!
Next Steps:
GG! You did it! After months of hard work, it is done! :D As you move onto the next lessons remember to practice your fundamentals and warm-ups! Good luck!
Thanks alot for taking the time out to critique my work. I'll make sure to work on the said mistakes and improve with time thanks ????
Some of you will have noticed that Drawabox doesn't teach shading at all. Rather, we focus on the understanding of the spatial relationships between the form we're drawing, which feeds into how one might go about applying shading. When it comes time to learn about shading though, you're going to want to learn it from Steven Zapata, hands down.
Take a look at his portfolio, and you'll immediately see why.
