Hello I’ll be handling the critique for you lesson 1 homework
Lines
-The superimposed lines are off to a great start as you have always started from a clearly defined point and kept all of the wavering on one side, they are also drawn with a good deal of confidence. We do have the expected fraying at the ends but this tends to disappear with more practice.
-Moving on to the ghosted lines these are also drawn with confidence but I notice that some of them tend to arch slightly, make sure you give them a consistent trajectory even if they are going to miss the ending point, accuracy tends to come with more mileage and can't really be forced now.
-The ghosted planes are no different from the ghosted lines, and here you are doing a better job committing to those lines.
Ellipses
-The tables of ellipses are looking tidy rather than rushed and I can see that you have kept in mind the angle, degree, spacing of these. Main thing here is that some of your ellipses are turning out quite uneven, so make sure you always aim to draw symmetrical shapes with well rounded ends.
-The ellipses in planes are turning out well I just want to call out one thing: You might be thinking that the center of the ellipses is the same as the center of the planes or that you should modify the elliptical ellipse shape so it touches the contact points, but this is not the case. Ellipses have to be symmetrical and have the same shape regardless of where they are, so the only things you can change is how wide the ellipse is and which position it is in.
-On the funnels you are doing a great job drawing the ellipses and it is great to see that they have not stiffened and are still drawn with confidence, just remember that the ellipses should fit in snugly within the sausage and also you still need to keep working on the alignment as some of the ellipses are tilting off the minor axis. Overall you are doing a great job on this section and I have no doubt you will get better with practice.
Boxes
-On the rough perspective your linework is looking confident, just remember that you should freehand all of the lines for your boxes. You are doing a great job aligning the sides of the boxes to the horizon line and the only thing I want to call out is that you are repeating your lines, remember that if you make a mistake you should not try to correct it by drawing on top of it, as it only makes it stand out more. Lastly your estimations to the vanishing point are a little off, but this will definitely get better with practice.
-The rotated boxes are turning out quite well as you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and consistent and you are clearly thinking about the rotation, the only thing I want to suggest is that you should try to give your drawings more room, by using more of the space available in your page it will be easier to ghost and draw your marks and it will be easier to think about the rotation.
-Finishing with the organic perspective, your lines are looking confident and it is great to see that you are not repeating your lines. You are already making some good attempts at the perspective of the boxes, but they still have some issues, which will be addressed on the box challenge. To conclude, remember that you can use lineweight on the parts where boxes overlap to clarify which ones are closer to us and which ones are further away.
Okay, you still have some things to keep working on but I have no doubt that you will continue to improve with practice. I'll go ahead and mark this lesson as complete, don’t forget to keep using these exercises as warm ups.
Next Steps:
250 Box Challenge
Thank you! I really appreciate the critique :)
A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.
In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
