Hey there! Congrats on completing Lesson 1! I'm Ennui, and I'll be giving you feedback today!

Let's take it section by section!

Lines:

Good going on the Superimposed Lines exercise! Your lines are confident, follow a steady trajectory, and there is only significant fraying at one end. That is great!

Your Ghosted Lines are really great too! I see steady, confident lines with minimal wobble or arching, and a high level of accuracy with joining the two points. I am also incredibly interested in the patterns you made but hey, I'm a simple person. I see complicated but beautiful pattern, I click.

Ghosted Planes are really good too! My earlier feedback stands in regards to the quality of your lines, and I'm seeing practically no undershooting. I do notice that in some points, you draw over it to correct a mistake. I advise you not to do that and instead just commit to the line, even if its way off. This is because attempting to correct a mistake like this only seems to direct more attention to the mistake. Still, great work!

Ellipses:

Nice work on the ellipses! I'm seeing consistent ellipses in your Tables of Ellipses, and you've drawn through them twice well, as well as largely been able to adhere to the boundaries. That is great work!

Your Ellipses in Planes also came out very well, with the same feedback of being able to adhere to the boundaries well. I did notice that you seemed to be facing trouble with the extremely contorted planes, but still managed to do them well. Good job there!

Funnels is also good! You've managed to keep the ellipses to the minor axis and the funnel well! Also good attempt at varying the degrees of the ellipses, even if the shift is slightly drastic, but that's fine. I did notice that in a couple of places you seemed to be having trouble keeping the ellipses together, but that's fine! Overall, good job!

Boxes:

Plotted Perspective came out well! Good job!

Your Rough Perspective also came out quite well. Most of your depth lines converged towards the VP, so that is great! Your boxes are also a lot more steady than mine were xD

Good attempt on the Rotated Boxes! I did notice that you had trouble keeping the extreme corner boxes close, but that's fine! It is a tough exercise, and you've given a great attempt.

Your Organic Perspective also came out really well! I like how you were able to keep to the guideline and the quality of your boxes! Also, good work on varying the box sizes to show perspective! I did once again notice the issue of drawing multiple times to correct a mistake, but overall, great work!

Final Critique:

A great attempt at tough exercises! You've done well with keeping your lines clean and steady! The only issue I would like to point out is drawing over your mistakes to correct them. Don't do that as it draws more attention to the mistake than just committing to the previous line would. However, you did a great job, and you're ready for the next challenge!

Remember to do two or three of these exercises for 10-15 minutes as warmups! I wish you luck in your art journey, and feel free to ask me if you have any questions!

Next Steps:

Go ahead with the 250 Box Challenge!

• Superimposed Lines

oThese lines start great with a defined starting point. However, begin to get frayed and the end and seem to curve with the longer lines. You could try to overcompensate and curve the other way to straighten the line out, that tip helped me a lot. But good smooth strokes, I can see you are using your shoulder.

• Ghosted Lines

o Good lines can see you are drawing with your shoulder, accuracy will come with time/practice

• Ghosted Planes/Ellipses

o Decent exercise, continue to practice your ellipses in warm ups!

• Table of Ellipses

o Great job of drawing through the ellipses. Continuing to practice ellipses will allow you to draw them confidently with muscle memory, so these could be a great warmup exercise. Sometimes the lines look wobbly and not as confident as previous exercises your completed.

• Plotted Perspective

o These look great

• Rough Perspective

o Really good job with drawing to the line to see errors of your lines. Lines are a bit wobbly and if you make a mistake try not to draw a “correction line” instead just continue with your first line.

• Rotated Boxes

o Really nice work creating the illusion of depth. Lines are a bit wobbly so that will improve if you continue to practice the ghosting method!

• Organic Perspective

o I can see that you are trying to rotate the boxes but I think next time it would help to over exaggerate so you get that more rounded shape.

• Summary

o Overall, I think this is a great submission. It shows a lot of improvement between lessons and that you are grasping the core ideas very well. I think the 250 boxes only help you even more!!

250 boxes and ghosting for warmups!

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
