I drew my first box on March 1st 2022 and my 250th on April 19 2022. This means for the last 50 days I have exactly drawn an average of 5 boxes a day - what a cool, unplanned coincidence :D

Thank you in advance to everyone that is looking through my work and giving my critique, I highly appreciate it!

Hi! I will be correcting your 250 box challenge today.

I will try to be brief and concise.

I see you applied Crosshatching and it looks concise. You didn't rush the lines and it's uniform.

I think you didn't apply much lineweight, although it's not mandatory I recommend you to start practicing it, because it will be almost indispensable in the following lessons.

Here you can see how to apply it well: https://imgur.com/OHvr7Mb

Here when applying it to boxes: https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/980a575e.jpg

You may notice that some of your lines arc a little bit.

When this happens it is somewhat dangerous as it can change the direction of the axis of your boxes.

I see that this is something constant in your boxes, so I will recommend you to read this section about lines, where you can see how to avoid this bowing:

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/10/arc

It is very good that you have drawn boxes with sharp and soft foreshortening. Use soft in your next lessons, since you will be working with objects of common size.

(sharp foreshortening is used on things very close to the eye or huge things).

Lastly and just as important: Your lines seem to converge to their correct vanishing point, but they do so very quickly.

Remember that we imagine the vanishing points very far away (outside the sheet) so you'll want the convergence to be lighter in your next boxes.

I'll leave you some homework to correct these mistakes.

Try not to rush through this, you have several things to work on here, so do it at your leisure!

Next Steps:

Draw another 20 boxes, taking into account what I mentioned above.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey! First of all thank you for taking some of your time and reviewing my work. I highly appreciate it!

I have some notes/thoughts to what you said :

  • I actually did apply lineweight to all my boxes. It is very subtle on the scan though :/ I also probably did it to lightly anyway, I will definitely try to improve it on the homework you have assigned me (/

  • The arching I noticed as well and tried to "overcome". I had an especially hard time with lines that were very step. Thank you for pointing it out again, so I remember to put more of my focus on improving that.

  • In the homework I will try my best to make my boxes converge very slowly. I noticed that I have a harder time with such boxes and probably subconsciously avoided them a bit too much. Again, thanks for the reminder!

I will come back to you in 2 to 6ish days (probably like 4), depending on how much time I find during the morning/evening each day.

Thanks again, have a nice week!

Oh, I understand everything you say.

The lineweight thing is understandable; my camera doesn't pick it up very well either.

So take it lighter on that part.

Oh, if you need more info about the convergence angle you can help here:

I hope you manage to correct those details in your 20 boxes!

Don't worry too much about how long it takes, I'll be here to help you whenever I can.

Hey!

I have just completed the last of the 20 boxes, Here is the result: https://imgur.com/a/tQdduon

I tired to focus on the points in your critique:

I applied the lineweight correctly this time (on discord someone told my that I also put it on the front edge, which is wrong. It only belongs on the silhouette.) So I hope it is better now.

I tried to focus on boxes with very light convergences and tried to avoid arching (the arching part is still there at some longer lines, but I think it got a little better).

I hope I followed your critique correctly and improved at least a bit :D

Thank you again for helping me out!

Congratulations on finishing the 250 Box challenge well done! I will say the biggest comment I can say looking through all of your boxes is most of them feel like they're coming from a wide angle. As in a lot of the boxes feel very extreme in their convergence they are really distorted, which is fine but it would be nice to see some variation. Distorted vs some that are so parallel they feel almost isometric. This is just to gain an understanding on how much you can change the feel of how the perspective feels on each cube.

Your lines look pretty good throughout, I would keep up the good work and I hope you gained some incite on free handing cubes for your future work.

Next Steps:

Lesson 2

Hey!

Thank you for your critique. I see what you mean with the boxes converging kinda/quite fast to the VPs. Someone else gave me this as a critique as well and also left some homework for me. I am going to try some more parallelish boxes in that homework and hope that I can improve on it (:

Thank you again for your insight, helps a lot to understand where my biggest problems lay!

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
