250 Box Challenge hatching

3:41 AM, Friday August 20th 2021

Hi, I'm recently working on 250 Box Challenge.

I have done hatching on the boxes with the ruler so far, and I wonder if I should draw the hatching lines freehand.

Should I draw those lines freehand, or can I draw those with a ruler?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

All lines should be drawn freehand including hatching. Rulers are only allowed much later on ( lesson6 IIRC ) with the exception of the line extending/checking part.

It's all valuable practice.

I don't believe there is a strict rule against doing hatching with a ruler, however it probably should be done freehand for practicality reasons; with a ruler you'll likely spend unnecessary extra time trying to keep them straight and aligned when the hatching's main purpose is just to help your eyes know which face is towards them.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
