Hi BWAPS!

I just recently started on Drawabox as well and just finished the lesson 2 but thought I could try help critique.

Your lines homework looks good! I don't see any squiggly unconfident lines. Just keep working on getting better with those superimposed lines so they are flaring less.

For the elipses some of the angles of the major axis are off, so keep an eye on that. And with the elipses on planes, due to some of the planes being distorted it would have been very challenging to put the elipses in there so good on you for that haha :)

The perspective with the boxes look pretty good. I did notice that your line quality did drop a bit, remember you can rotate your page and with practice they will get better! I was really impresses with the rotated boxes! That one really roughed me up but your one looks really solid. Make sure to take your time on your hatching if you are going to be doing them. Create parallel and consistent lines or your drawings will look messy.

Hopefully this helps!

I think you can head on to the 250 box challenge! Just remember to keep coming back to some of these exercises!

Take Care!!

Next Steps:

Continue working on lesson one exercises as warm ups and move on to 250 box challenge!!

Sorry for late reply. I appreciate the advice, however I actually don't agree with you with regards to my lines. It probably has to do with the photo quality, but idk. I'm just looking at my lines and most of them seem pretty wavy to me.

I think your stuff looks way better, tbh. I'm on the 250 box challenge and I've gotten at least two boxes with diverging lines and a bunch with lines that cross very quickly so idk what's going on there. Whereas yours look really good.

There's so many people in this community who seem to naturally grasp these exercises but my homework kinda looks like crap lol.

I don't know what I'm doing here.

Hello!

With the photo quality and the lines, what you said may be the case. However as artists many of us are our own hardest critic, keep that in mind. Your art is not as bad as you think it is. We are able to see all the flaws in our work because we were the ones that made them in the first place, but when we look at other people's work their mistakes are not as obvious.

When making the boxes, really think of the box in 3D space. Your planes from lesson one show the converging of lines well. You can use that and think of the boxes as being made up of planes. The rate at which they converge between the planes may be different but you will be able to adjust them and see what went wrong. It is a process of trial and error. You can also go back to plotting perspective with horizon lines, which will help you get a better understanding. Play around with it. The drawabox videos on youtube show you the process which may help. A tip when you start box with the Y is to remember the center of the Y is the closest point to the viewer. If you need help just ask everyone would be happy to help!

We are all in a different stages, with different amounts of experience than others, so don't be discouraged. It may be some peoples second go at drawabox or maybe even more. All of us, no matter what level, are struggling with something.

I really recommend you to go to Adam Duff's youtube channel and look at his Art talks or Behind the scenes playlists. He has many videos that have been helping me lots in this mental struggle with art.

It really is a tough road, but if you stay on it you will keep improving!

You got it BWAPS!

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
