I desaturated the images because the color of the light I had available for the pictures had some weird gradient that made it hard to look at the pages.

Hello Boxed_Up and congratulations on finishing the lesson 1.

Now lets have a look at your attempts.

Lines:

  • Your superimposed lines seems confident and there is little to no fraying at the beginning of the lines, so a great work there. And the fraying at the end seems not too scattered as well, but do not worry about that for now, it will improve with deliberate warmups in future.

  • Your ghosted lines and planes have a good confident stroke as well and you have plotted the points for lines as well which is good, but in some instances, we can see a little bit of wobble and arching of lines, I will suggest to focus more on ghosting method to feel more comfortable and try to use shoulders. And do not worry about undershooting and overshooting for now as well, regular warmup sessions will make it better.

Ellipses:

  • Most of your ellipses are drawn with confident strokes and been drawn through twice which is good, and the funnel exercise is done with confident strokes as well along with smooth ellipses but we can see some deformed structures as well in some ellipses especially in the ghosted planes exercise and some ellipses in funnel exercises were not aligned with the minor axis.

  • So overall, the Ellipses section was nice but do include them in your warmups regularly to get better mileage, try ghosting them more and using the shoulders will get in habit as well which will result in better formed ellipses overall.

Boxes:

Boxes are a tough ones to start with, so congratulation for attempting them with confidence. But there are few things I should mention:

  • In Plotted perspective, you did a great job!

  • In Rough perspective exercises, I saw some arching of lines but do not worry, as mentioned earlier, regular warmups will tend to that, also this should be taken care of in future warmup exercises that the width lines should be parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to horizon.

  • In Rotated boxes, it turned out pretty well. You also did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent. While the rotations here aren't perfect this was a good effort overall. The more you draw and develop your spatial thinking ability the easier these rotations are to handle. This is a great exercise to come back to after a few lessons or the boxes challenge to see how much your spatial thinking ability has improved.

  • In Organic Perspective, apart from the aforementioned remarks about lines, try not to correct your lines by going through it again(as seen in one box only, which is great ofcourse as it was not repeated), do not worry about accuracy for now.

  • Further in Rotated boxes as well as Organice perspective, you could add line weights to the silhouette by going over them once with proper ghosting method. But overall it was a good attempt.

Next Steps:

You can move on to the infamous(crucible) 250 boxes challenge, remember take it slow, and do the warm-ups they really do wonders, more than you can imagine if done properly. My best wishes and good luck for the upcoming challenge.

My bet wishes for your future endevours. And do not forget to join the discord community if you have not already, getting guidance while doing the exercises such as 250 boxes can be quite beneficial.

Hello, I think that you did well enough to pass this lesson. Great job :)

Here's some pointers that I would like to give you:

First, it seems like you did your lines perfectly in some pages, but in some other pages there's a bit of mishap.

Second and lastly, you can work on your ellipses as a part of your exercise routine before drawing, as I can see, there's also a bit of a mishap there, you should keep the ellipses in bound and not let it go loose as much as you can.

Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge, Good luck and keep the pointers in mind.

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
