The shadows and limbs are the hardest parts for me to do.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Mikka! I'll be reviewing your homework. Let's see:

Organic Forms with Contour Curves:

They look pretty good, the two main issues I see are: 1. they tend to be elongated at the ends instead of being round (like the idea of a couple of spheres joined by a tube), and 2. sometimes your curves don't reach either of the edges and misalign in relation to the minor axis of the form.

Outside from that, they look pretty good, just look out for those things in the future.

Insect Drawings:

In general, they are well made. Your basic forms are usually well defined, intersect each other, and the added forms wrap around them nicely. Something you could improve are your legs, remember to establish them first as simple sausages and then add forms to adequate them to their actual shapes, don't try to give them the actual shape by observation on "first draft". Also, in your grasshopper, some of the masses in the legs present complexity where there really isn't any, this is what I mean.

But overall, I think you're ready for Lesson 5. Well done! Keep in mind the advice as you move forward.

Next Steps:

  • Move on to Lesson 5

Thank you so much for taking the time to critique my submission. I'll keep in mind all the things I need to improve on.

With how saturated the market is, it is tough for such projects to get eyes on their work.

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
