Hello Pinksamurai. I'm chiran. I'm here for your submission to review and I'll try my best to help you out .alright lets jump in:
Section 1: LINES: HOW ARE YOUR lINES?
-
your lines are off to a good start. thumbs up!. I can say that you prioritize confidence over perfection hence your lines are smooth and confident.
-
there is minimum amount of fraying on the starting end that means that you did take time to position the pen correctly on the starting point. fraying on the end point is normal as you're getting used to drawing from your shoulder.
-
In super imposed exercises there are the lines that came out wobbly and curvy and in ghosted exercises some lines shows subtle s curves and are wobbly at the end point.
WHY SOME LINES CAME OUT WOBBLY AND CURVY?
-
I suspect that you are using your elbow pivot instead of drawing from your shoulder.
-
wobbly and S curves lines are the result of hesitant and slow in execution.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE THEM IN FURTHER EXERCISES?
-
making sure that you are always using your shoulder to draw lines is the simple answer for that.
-
To avoid wobbly and 'S' curvy lines just increasing the speed of drawing your lines can help and also feel free to experiment different speed of execution while warm ups and opt for the better clean ones.
-
arching might happen because not using shoulder as a main driving force or if you are sure that you're using the shoulder then it can be improved by arching consciously in opposite direction.
-
sacrificing some amount of accuracy at the beginning stag and prioritizing confidence will greatly help ( don't hesitate to overshoot tho)
-
never forget to incorporate these exercises in regular warm up routine.
overall the job of ghosting is done very well here meaning you did take time to plan where the line starts and ends. thats a good sign! keep up!. lets move on to ellipses.
Section 2 ELLIPSES: HOW ARE YOUR ELLIPSES?
-
Ellipses are smooth, yet sometimes lack confident in execution and are therefore wobbly and uneven ( by uneven I mean like sharp bend at the major axis, see 2nd row of page 2 of table of ellipses)
-
you did strive to keep ellipses within boundaries and touching gently each other so that means the job of planning is done well!.
-
you did draw some bunch of ellipses randomly without keeping their degrees and rotation constant ( especially on 4th and 5th row of page 1 of table of ellipse and last row of page 2 of table). These are, however, simply free ellipses with no real goals. its worth to revisit this video to get better understanding of what I'm saying https://youtu.be/7WLmXufShyA
-
very few ellipses in ellipses in planes exercise are drawn through 1 or 1.5 instead of 2 or 3 times and yet still lacks confidence in execution.
5.on funnels exercise some of the Ellipses are not aligned to the minor axis ( the axis which divides the ellipses into two equal halves). especially on the corners of your page.
WHY YOUR ELLIPSES ARE WOBBLY AND UNEVEN?
-
mainly due to thinking about accuracy rather than confidence. It is also a result of not using shoulder and ghosting method.
-
It's definitely worth to re watch these both videos dropped below
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE THEM?
-
well the confidence should always be prioritized first, later you can work on accuracy. at the beginning its always hard to get it right, but keep reminding yourself that confidence should always be greater than the accuracy.
-
you should definitely continue to use ghosting method, drawing from your shoulder and make sure that you are always use your arm to get the best flow as possible. while ghosting ( hovering in a motion over the page not touching the page) make sure to plan where the ellipses will sit, that means where will the top and bottom edge will go and start and end an ellipse at the minor axis ( the narrow width ). you are free to rotate the page to find the comfortable angle of approach.
3. little advice on funnel exercise is that, next time when doing these exercise as warm up make a conscious effort to try and align ellipses to the minor ellipse. try to increase the ellipse degrees ( that means working from the narrower width ellipses to large width ellipses at the end of ellipses ) starting from the center to the end. begin and end your ellipse at the minor axis in order to eliminate the sharp curve at the major axis, and help with symmetry a little, and finally speed up your ellipse making, if you think you are going too slow.
4.lastly this is not the end, continue to incorporate these exercises in regular warm ups ( only for 10-15 min) and know what you should be aiming for and work towards it. I am confident that you will also get better with deliberate practice. now moving on to boxes.
Section 3 BOXES: HOW ARE YOU BOXES?
-
your boxes are off to a good start. from my observation on plotted perspective exercise very few boxes on the second row are not drawn through. watch out for that !. just a remainder that in two point perspective all the vertical lines of the boxes are always vertical and the horizontal lines will converge to specific vp's on the horizon. apart from this your plotted perspective looks great!
-
In rough perspective exercise, the issues with the lines are still present ( i.e wobbly and curvy in nature). great job on checking your boxes convergence. but some of the vertical lines of the box are not vertical here (there should be no guesswork!)
-
coming to rotated boxes exercises some of the boxes are not drawn through. you should definitely consider to draw through the form even though when you feel hesitant to draw. the gaps between the boxes are not narrow and consistent ( especially the top and bottom ones) so that you are not been able to use neighbouring forms as effectively as possible to infer information about space. there by ending up boxes in a randomly rotated in space. overall you did a great job! for completing this exercise
-
coming to organic perspective exercise, there is no need to apply pressured line weight to the internal lines of the box instead what you can do is that applying line weight to the silhouette or body of the box in a subtle yet confident way. Perspective is slightly off in both rotated boxes and organic perspective exercises. but no worries you're spatial ability will get improved after completing 250 box challenge.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE THEM?
-
while doing one point perspective box warm ups keep the faces of the box parallel to the page what I meant to say is that in one point perspective all the horizontal lines of the box are parallel to the horizon and all the vertical lines are perpendicular to horizon and the thickness or depth lines of the box will converge to a vanishing point.t his point should be kept in mind during warm ups.
-
just a remainder : for the box construction in organic perspective exercise is that after you plotted out the Initial Y of a box think about how you want each set to converge and try and think about (in rough terms) where the vanishing point is going to be for each set.
-
Rotated exercise: We also know that at this stage it's definitely hard to complete this exercise and I just want to bring you to the right tract so unfortunately I'm asking for a revision for this exercise not full tho, only quarter of it ( one quadrant) since some of the boxes are not drawn through and gaps are not narrow and consistent. I'm going to drop some link below which will be super useful to complete this exercise.
-
Before you starting, I want you to come back to the rotated boxes article here:https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes
-
you are free to watch the video of rotated box exercise and read article as many times as possible until you understand it. and here is another useful tip : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/368870697742630912/715669112222908466/zfr3o7xneog31.png
WHAT ARE YOUR REVISION ?
-
A quarter of completed rotated box exercise( not full page only one quadrant )
-
In the same page provide a table and include some ellipses in it.
-
If there is still space in that , provide some planes and include ellipse in it.
HOW SHOULD YOUR REVISION LOOK LIKE?
-
lines, boxes and ellipses are drawn with confidence. ( confidence should be prioritized )
-
Ellipses should be drawn through 2 or 3 times ( preferably 2) and they should be executed with confidence .make a conscious effort to use ghosting method and your shoulder to draw them
-
keep the degree of the ellipses consistent throughout the row panel. make sure to set goals while planning.
-
the boxes should be drawn through ( like we have x ray vision )
-
the gaps between the boxes should be kept as low as possible.
remember we are not expecting beautiful work instead we are here to guide you to the right track and to remind what you should be aiming for in order to get better throughout the exercises.push yourself through bounds. don't pick the path of least resistance. don't be afraid of making mistakes, be hatred to mistakes. Also DO NOT RUSH throughout this course. I'm awaiting response from your side.
Thank you.
Next Steps:
REVISION :1 page containing quarter of the rotated boxes, table of ellipses and ellipses in planes.
I encourage you to take as much time as you need and go through the lesson materials and understand at your pace. follow the instructions and execute to your best of your ability.
