Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 3 homework.

-Starting with the arrows section, they are drawn with a good deal of confidence which helps to capture the fluidity with which they move through space. The negative space between the zigzagging sections of the ribbon decreases as they move further away and the foreshortening is well done too. Overall you did a great job on this exercise.

-This fluidity carries on to your leaves, remember to draw the arrowhead for the flow lines, it is a very subtle pint, but it definitely helps to reinforce the sense of tri dimensionality of these leaves. Also I think you may have gone into autopilot when adding the little bumps and cuts, so take alooka t your reference and draw each bump and cut according to the information you can distill from it, keep in mind that you don’t want to copy though.

-You are doing great on the branches. Just keep practicing to have the tails of each segment to overlap with one another so that you can achieve smoother transitions. Another thing that is very important to keep in mind here is the degree shift of each ellipse. It seems to me that you have kept them consistent for all your branches including those in the actual plant drawings.

Now let’s move on to the plant constructions

-I can see that you have relied on construction which is good, you worked your way up starting from simple and carried the solidity of those simpler stages to the more complex ones. Everything in your plant constructions is tightly related and I can't really find any gaps between each step. That said, I want to make a few points clear.

-In this mushroom drawing make sure to align your ellipses to a minor axis, you never want to draw an ellipse by eyeballing and guesswork, it is always good to have one parameter defined, that can be the alignment, degree angle and spacing. Also don’t forget about the degree shifts, to make things clearer you can watch the lesson 1 ellipses video.

-In this rose you did an excellent job, you drew each petal in its entirety instead of cutting them off. This forces you to use your spatial reasoning more, a habit that I hope you keep nurturing in the future.

-In this lily of the forest, you don’t want to leave any arbitrary space between the ellipses and the petals, use them as a indicator of your petals should wrap around.

–Finally, try to be more subtle with the lineweight, only add one superimposed line in a confident stroke, if you overdo it you risk turning your drawing into mere graphic forms and taking the solidity of your construction away.

So these are my observations, overall you have done a great job and I have no doubt you are prepared for lesson 4, good luck.

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
