I completed the first lesson, yay! Didn't draw much before, only started learning now, and I already like it, it clears the mind somehow.

Ghosted lines are such a nice technique, towards the end of the homework I was able to do them 4 times faster than in the beginning. And sometimes I just get into the right posture and the right mindset or someting, and do several perfect lines in a row, but sometimes it's the opposite. I kind of struggle with ellipses though, they are all not good. The rotated boxes thing is horrible as it's supposed to be lol. Now will be moving to the 250 boxes, hope that will improve my perspective sense.

Hi! I'm very much a beginner who just completed lesson 1 as well, so feel free to take this all with a grain of salt, but I got feedback on needing to work on my ellipses, so I figured I'd share what I've been working on that I feel has been paying off.

I was told to focus less on accuracy while I work on getting smooth shapes (which has helped a ton.) But also what I've really focused on was my shoulder. It was more intuitive for me to do it with lines, but with my shoulder I kind of imagined that a teacher was guiding my arm -- so I loosed up my wrist, my grip on the pen, everything, and really made circles with my shoulder. When I'm able to release the rest of my arm, I'm able to get some decent looking ellipses. (That and the ghosting, of course.)

I'd suggest you try one more table of ellipses just to see what you can get done there. (I'm pretty impressed with your rotated boxes, gotta say! That's a toughie.)

Next Steps:

Try one more table of ellipses for some smooth shapes.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thanks a lot for your kind words and critique! I tried some more ellipses, focusing on doing it with the shoulder, and I guess they are a little better than previous ones, but I think I'll do at least another sheet of ellipses just in case.

Great. I'd definitely say keep working on making very smooth shapes with your ellipses, make sure you're practicing ghosting them too! But I'm marking as complete to move on to the 250 boxes. (I believe two other community members will need to agree with me.)

Next Steps:

250 boxes

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
