It looks like it should be curving the other way. I can imagine explaining why it's otherwise may be difficult, but if anyone can help, that would be appreciated.
I'll try my best. It is as if the box is a sort of wedge opening a "mouth" in the sphere. The two faces of the box enlarge the opening in opposite directions to make room for themselves. Hence the two "lips" of the sphere should rest on the respective sides of the box.

Can't really explain but the green one looks right. Are you seeing the sphere in front of the cube or the cube in front of the sphere. I see the cube in front and the sphere behind, your interpretation appears to be the opposite. It is key to decide what object is in front of the other.
Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.
Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
