Thank you so much for your critique. As I wasn't able to find a 0.5mm liner in any art stores near me, I used a 0.1mm then a 0.3mm when I could get one.

I'm excited to move on to 250 boxes soon.

Hello and congrats on finishing lesson 1. I'll be looking over your homework today. You put in a lot of good work here and it shows because I can see a lot of improvement as you worked through all of these exercises. So starting with your superimposed lines these are looking pretty good. You are keeping a clear starting point on these and then drawing confident lines. You are having more wobble and tapering lines on the challenging longer lines and curves which is normal and will improve with more practice. Moving onto your ghosted lines and planes these are looking very nice. You are using the ghosting method to great effect here and your accuracy is getting very good.

Your tables of ellipses pages are looking great as well. Your first page is definitely weaker than the second and you were struggling with maintaining solid shape but I am already seeing good improvement by the second page. Great job drawing through all of your ellipses as well. Your ellipses in planes are looking excellent. You are ghosting and more focused on getting a solid ellipse shape than trying to perfectly fit them into the plane and they are looking very solid. That accuracy will get better the more you practice. Your ellipses in funnels are looking good as well. You are getting a bit of tilting off the minor axis so that is something you will want to keep in mind but overall I'm not seeing too many issues. Please check the lesson notes here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/notaligned

Plotted perspective looks great no issues here. Your rough perspective exercise turned out well. You are keeping up with your confident linework and great job extending your lines back to check your work. As you can see your perspective estimations were quite off on some of these but that get a lot better the more and more you practice.

Your rotated box exercise turned out pretty fantastic. You are doing a great job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent. You are also using line weight to great effect here. You are having a slight problem with not rotating your boxes enough so some of them look to be merely moving back into perspective instead of rotating. This is a pretty common mistake please check the lesson notes here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/notrotating Your organic box exercises are looking pretty good as well. Once again your linework is nice and confident and while you are having a few issues with your box convergences I'm not seeing too many issues over all. This was a really excellent submission and you should be proud of all of the hard work you put into this. Good luck with the 250 box challenge and keep up the great work!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thank you for your time and for providing comprehensive critique. :) This is quite encouraging for when I revisit these exercises.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
