There is a chance that one or two random pages might be missing and that they're not entirely in order of completion because imgur was being the biggest pain in the world since yesterday and now I'm just... you've no idea. I'd rather do the challenge again than go through what imgur put me through again.

Anyway, I think I mostly improved from my first set of boxes (I think page 1 is actually near the end of the pictures -- the page number is on the top right corner of every page) and I'm definitely feeling more confident with my understanding of perspective because of it.

What I did struggle with is my desire to correct lines that are obviously wrong. I kept doing it out of habit and had to really use every fibre of my being to try to stop doing that! There are also some points where my superimposed lines really missed the mark. Overall I think a lot "clicked" for me while doing this exercise though.

YAY! Optimum Kitten You have shown Quite a lot of Improvements at the End of this Challenge. We can say that your spatial Reasoning has much more Improved than in the Earlier Boxes.

Ha Ha! Imgur is sometimes a pain in the Ass. okay lets roll the Intro!

Hey Optimum! I'm Chiran and I decided to look over your submission and offer my Advises on it as best and helpful as possible.

before we get started these are the name given specifically because of their order and to represent the specific section of the boxes

Newbies - ( 1-100 boxes) 2. Intermediates - (101-200 boxes) and 3. pros - ( 201- 250 boxes).

This feed back will consists of three parts. Alrighty! lets start exploring the three parts. Shall we?

PART 1: THE PRAISES ( The job you did well in the challenge) :)

  • Checking your mistakes: your mistakes are slowly reducing in the challenge because of the line extention method (that is checking your mistakes by extending the correction lines away from the viewer) , because of this your Intermediates and pros are looking good. so thats great!

  • while line weight and hatching are optional in this challenge. You did a solid job on using those tools to reinforce the form you are constructing ( in this case box) and thereby providing a more visual Info to the viewer. we advice you to continue to use those tools even in warm ups to build mileages with them.

  • I can say that you are building a sense of confidence and patience in drawing your boxes by plotting down the starting and end points of the lines first before executing them or before committing them, so thats nice.

  • another job you did well was constructing various varieties of boxes in this challenge without repeating the similar type of boxes. so thats great too!

  • You got some pretty decent amount of convergence on the intermediates and pros so good job on that too!

PART 2: WHERE IT WENT SLIGHTLY OFF? ( Where you should keep an eye on) ( No worries part!)

You are on the right track and you have understood the concept of perspective very well so the box challenge has done its job.but there are hiccups in your work that needs to be identified and removed.

so yeah I will do my job to mention and identify some of the minor issues in your works and you can do your job by including 1-2 boxes in your warm ups to reduce them in the future.

Starting from your lines:

  • the main Issue that is present in your submission is repeating or re create or correcting your lines. I believe It has a bad habit and we know that Repeating or correcting the lines Even when they went off is a mistake in this Course. One thing we can do to reduce them is being aware of your habits and conscious of your mistakes while drawing. so when you again find in a situation where you are tempted to repeat the lines, then call it out loudly ( loudly) to yourself - " Hey I'm repeating this line and I must stop It and move on thinking nothing had happened cuz If I repeat this lines It will definitely became a dangerous bad habit"

  • Your line work looks really solid, smooth and confident but they are times where you seem to hesitate while executing resulting in a slow and wobbly lines. These Issues will take time to reduce but you should always be constantly Aware of your mistakes and work towards them by trying your best to avoid them in the warm ups. They will definitely get better and better through practice.

  • Sometimes your hatching lines are not planned before executing. So we advise you to take your time to plan ( planning means plotting down the points and ghosting over them before executing) even the hatching lines and super imposed lines and execute them from your shoulder with confidence as the utmost priority. Don't get caught up on accuracy cuz It will create wobbly and uneven Lines.

  • Little note on line weight.- line weight which is added to the silhouette to the box ( or body of the box) is a great tool to reinforce the form we are conveying to the viewer ( in this case box). they can also became a bad tool if we use them to hide our mistakes by going overboard with them. so always we advise to not go overboard with them. but instead try your best to be subtle with the line weight.

Now jumping to Boxes:

  • of course you had improved throughout the challenge but there are times where some of the set of lines converges at a faster rates than the others resulting in converging in pairs. yep this issue you can definitely work on, in your warm ups. by trying to know the relationships between each lines related to its distance.https://imgur.com/KSHwTwo

It's completely and totally normal to have the back corner line slightly off compared to the rest.they have significantly improved at end of your work so nice job!.

It would have been better If you had taken time to Construct Some Extreme foreshortening and bigger boxes in this Challenge to build some better mileages and spatial Ability with Them also ( sine most of the newbies and Intermediates in your work are focused mainly on Shallow foreshortening).and there are times where you sometimes construct similar types of boxes in alternative pages .Shallow foreshortening boxes are Important because most of the time this is what is Demanded in the physical World. but Extreme foreshortening boxes are also Important when we want to convey more information in a scene like fish Eye perspective.

PART 3: THE JOB WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR BOXES IN OUR WARM UPS

You're making good progress towards understanding the concepts introduced in this challenge, below I'll be listing some things that will hopefully help you in your future attempts at these boxes.

  • Always make an effort to take your time while adding line weight and hatching to boxes in order to reinforce the solidity we are conveying. make sure to plan them before executing them.because every marks we make should serve its purposes.

  • THE INNER CORNER PARADOX: In this challenge, we are estimating where our lines going to converge to a point. as we are humans, it is almost impossible to perfectly estimate where our lines will going to converge thereby resulting in an error. this error will continue to accumulate as we construct the box freely rotated in space. finally this accumulated error will be thrown to the back corner. So its pretty normal to have the inner back corner come out pretty off.

I want to take a look at this info here;https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png

In this image we can know that how each line will behave relating to the position from its neighbouring edges and the VP.So we can arrive at the conclusion that, If the distance between the internal edges and external edges gets reduce more and more they will eventually become parallel to one and another ( but keep in mind they will converge slightly at a negligable amount no matter what). Alternatively If the distance between the internal corner and the external grow more and more the internal line will also converge.

you can also try and start from the back corner if the box is narrower.https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh.

if your aware of these notes, then you need to build mileage by including 1-2 boxes in your daily warm up routine. after that your boxes will get better and better and will eventually make you happy at the end. :D

  • Even if your Ink flow is inconsistent please do not repeat or re attempt or re create your lines. so again try your best to move on that nothing has happened.we should continue treat every lines with respect How do we treat with respect?- first we should plan where our lines will start and end by plotting the points and ghost them several times ( hovering in motion) and draw them with confidence and from the shoulder.

  • And as always continue to experiment with your boxes and have fun with it. try to construct some bigger and extreme foreshortening boxes as well in your warm ups. experimentation, observation and results ( like in practicals :D) is always important for our growth.

  • Last thing which is worth Reminding here is that Speed of execution: when to increase the speed of drawing the lines and when to slow down?

If the lines came out dark, wobbly, contains subtle S curve and undershooted then increasing the speed of drawing your lines can reduce these issues. however if the lines are overshooting more and the flow of ink in your pen is inconsistent then its advisable to reduce the speed and try to lift the pen off the page when reaching the end dot.

feel free to experiment with different speed of drawing your lines from point A to point B during your warm up session and opt for the smooth and consistent ones. Increasing the speed of execution can really help in reducing wobbly lines and subtle S curves.. And it can also help in reducing the course correction of your lines too!.

Always make sure you are starting at the Starting dot exactly after the ghosting job.

yes We should continue to use ghosting method, drawing from shoulder and make sure that We are always use our arm to get the best flow as possible.

Now coming to Important point :

Of course you had done great job on putting lots of focus, energy and time in completing this Challenge so hats off for that. but there are things I feel like that you need to improve on them some more. I just want to bring you to the right path so Unfortunately I'm asking for a revision of 15 boxes. man it definitely feels bad to give revisions on this Challenge but I just want to make sure that you are understanding the purposes

THE REVISION: WHAT ARE THE REVISION?

15 Boxes - 5 per pages

HOW TO TACKLE THE REVISION?

Keep in mind the Above mentioned points over there and work towards that goal. Try your best as you can but don't expect perfectionism!

first priority= Executing with confidence

second priority=even if we have to sacrifice accuracy We should always continue to use ghosting method, drawing from shoulder and make sure that We are always use our arm to get the best flow as possible.

Include some bigger and extreme foreshortening boxes along with shallow foreshortening.

The point of this revision is not to expect some wonderful works but instead its just to remind you what you should be focus on while working toward these exercises.

understand the materials at your own pace and execute to your best. there is no deadline to it so take all the time you need because it is definitely worth your time. so I believe that you will take my feed back to the heart and work with it.

I'm awaiting to your response. I hope this helps. have a nice day!

Thank you OPTIMUM!

Next Steps:

THE REVISION:

  1. 15 boxes - 5 box per page

  2. Focus on executing smooth, confident lines from your shoulder and plan before execution.

  3. Do not tend to repeat your lines.

  4. Having any questions related to this feed back. Feel free to ask in the reply section or ping me in the draw a box discord server.

I know You can do this. Good luck Mate!

THANK YOU!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Wow, Chiran! Thank you so, so much for your incredibly helpful and thoughtful feedback! I appreciate it immensely!

I'll focus on doing 15 more boxes and keep in mind: more dramatic foreshortening, don't repeat my lines (this is so hard for me so I'll really concentrate), and I'll also concentrate better on my line weight and hatching. I admit there were times when I was making boxes that I would go into a "sense of flow" which meant I wasn't fully thinking about what I was doing.

Thank you again so much!

Hi again, Chiran! I'm not entirely sure how to submit revisions, but I think this is right. Please let me know if I've done this wrong!

So, I tried to be more careful about not letting myself repeat lines, and to be more confident and not let myself hide mistakes. I also tried to create more boxes of varying sizes and with more dramatic foreshortening. I found I had a lot of trouble with bigger boxes, so I did more boxes than you asked for. I hope that's okay.

Here's the link to the revisions: https://imgur.com/a/m7NyZQP

I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback! Do you mind letting me know your thoughts on these revisions?

Fantastic Work Optimum!. You did an Awesome Job here. Keep up the good work Mate!

Hello again OptimumKitten. Yep its the right way of submitting the revision and I will definitely provide my thoughts on this Attempt.

Alright Lets take a closure look and Analyze your attempt.

What are the Praises?-

  • Your line work looks solid and confident and it is going great compared to Earlier submission. So Well Done!. the revision has done its job of not letting you to repeat the lines and hide those mistakes so thats nice as well

  • Experimentation- Good job on constructing some various sizes of the boxes and Also Shallow and Rapid Foreshortening boxes in this revision.

  • you got some consistent amount of convergence in your boxes so good job on that too!.

Where you should keep an eye on ?-

  • If I just have to Nitpick something then there are Times where your boxes faces some divergence Issue like we can see on box 15 and 17. So we should remember always that all the parallel lines in the 3d world will appear to converge on a 2d flat page.so a set of parallel lines ( A set of parallel lines= 4 lines moving Either only in X or y or Z direction) converge to a specific vanishing point which lies either in X or y or Z direction.

  • In a minor times the lines came out wobbly, It may be due to thinking about Accuracy at the time. so we advise you to be aware of it next time and always draw your lines Confidently from your shoulder.

THE JOB WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR BOXES IN OUR WARM UPS:

  • The Converging in pairs and Lines diverging Issues will take more time and practice to get reduced in our work. So we should always be mindful of the lines relationship respective to its relative position from the Vanishing points. https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png

you can plot as many points of starting and end point of a line in a box and can check them without Even committing to them while ghosting over them.

  • feel free to experiment with different speed of drawing your lines from point A to point B during your warm up session and opt for the smooth and consistent ones.

  • And as always continue to experiment with your boxes and have fun with it.

  • Last but not the least, THE WARM UPS.

MY POINT OF VIEW:

Overall I can say that your revision looks much better and solid. Hats off for that. Thank you so much for your time and effort in Your revision and responding to my feedback.

I'm confident that you will improve much further In the future by keeping the mistakes in mind in your Warm ups.

so yeah I'm allowing you to move on to Lesson 2 by marking your lesson as Complete.

YAY! we made It. Congratulations on Completing the 250 box challenge. I hope this feedbacks helps. Have a wonderful Artistic Journey Ahead. I'm awaiting to see your progress throughout.

Thank you OPTIMUMKITTEN!.

Next Steps:

WHAT NEXT?-

  • feel free to move on to lesson 2

  • set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes- know your goal , be conscious of your mistakes and fight for 10 or 15 minutes in warm ups. be as perfect as you can but don't expect perfection!.

Thank you!

Hey man, I saw your boxes and I can say they are pretty consistent. There is some minor error in the line on the back side of the boxes while drawing through them, and it is common and quite inevitable so that's not a big deal. A tip i might give is to consider the lines in relation to the ones which join it rather than just the 4 lines going in one direction. You had checked convergence in the opposite direction for a few boxes, but I see that error disappears in later boxes, so kudos to you for understanding that along the way. Also you might want to try going with larger boxes as I think much of these are of the same size, I'd appreciate if you try and experiment on your own with larger sizes and different levels of lines converging. I see two or three boxes which are perfect in their sense, so thats some achievement. But still you must still be incorporating this in your routine and not forget the whole thing altogether. Thickening of the lines is also done nicely, cross hatching is also good. so yeah great job overall. You should definitely review your own work one more time, see some things that you feel you are lacking in or felt a bit difficult to do, then just work on that, other than that you are ready for the next lesson.

hopefully this was helpful :)

Next Steps:

Revisit your work one more time, then move on to next lesson. Onwards and upwards.

Thank you so much Rennaisance! I definitely had a tendency to make my boxes similar sizes or too small at times, so I'll keep that in mind too for my future boxes. Thanks again!
