Some images are upside down. I'm sorry about that.

And!! Some of the boxes are experimenting box and fail, so ignore that.

Again..., any critiques are welcome!! :)

First off, congrats on making 250 boxes! You can be proud for the rest of your life. The boxes look correct, but few things stand out to me:

  1. Remember about the fact, that every perspective point converges, even if by a small amount. You seem to sometimes forget that and make one axis of lines converge, and the other two look parallel to each other, and that's a big no no.

  2. Your hatching seems a little bit of lazy, remember that it is also a valid part of the exercise that trains you to make nice and confident lines, your hatching seems sometimes to fry on both ends and sometimes they are not parallel. It is not a very big deal, but remember to use ghosting method for every line you make.

  3. Your line weight is a little bit weird and unconsistent, I suppose you tried to mask a badly drawn line by making another as lineweight. Don't do that, let your lines fail and show you on what you need to focus to make them better. Lineweight is kind of a style preference, but usually it is used either to add more depth to the object (ergo put more weight on the closest point of the box relative to the viewer) or outline an object so it stands out more (not really usefull to DaB applications), you will train lineweight more in lesson 2, so don't worry about it too much.

Overall great job. Good luck and remember about having fun drawings!

Next Steps:

Congratulations on finishing lesson the box challenge! Your next step is lesson 2

As I marked this as complete, you are now qualified to critique lesson 1 and box challenge submissions.

-Doing critiques is a way of learning and solidifying concepts. I can atest to that after having done hundreds of critiques. There are a lot of concepts that I did not understand, and thanks to critiquing I started understanding them. Which made me learn a lot more through the course.

-Another thing is that as the number of current submissions is super high and if you do some critiques, those would be less submissions I'd have to critique before reaching your next submissions, so you'd get your critiques faster. Uncomfortable also implemented a system that makes your submissions appear higher in the queue if you do critiques, so that would improve your chances even more.

It's totally optional of course, I won't force anyone to give critiques. But me and the other people who are critiquing would be super grateful if you gave it a shot.

Good luck on lesson 2, and keep up the good work!

NOTE: here's a quick guide on critiquing lesson 1 submissions.

and here's another on critiquing box challenge submissions.

There are a few people that feel hesitant to critique because they feel they aren't ready to, so hopefully it'll help you in case you are one of those people.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

I know that every perspective point has converged but maybe I'm wrong, I thought when a box is too far, some line will look almost parallel.

Thanks for Critique, It's very helpful much as I need now to start Lesson 2 :)

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
