Texture Analysis: cannot grasp crumpled paper

This one may be an extremely dumb question, but I want to leave no space for even a slight misinterpretation, so here I am asking.
While I was analyzing a surface of crumpled paper, I stumbled across the fact that it's folds rarely leave cast shadows (if I understand correctly what a cast shadow is) and the only thing I'm left with is the shadow on the fold (or in another language - the initial form) itself. I made an oversimplified photo of what I'm trying to tell.
If I push a light source to extreme, then some cast shadows may appear, but still it's not always the case, as displayed in another oversimplified photo.
The homework assignment states that I don't need to worry about cast shadows when analyzing crumpled paper, but doesn't explicitly state how I should approach it. Do I understand correctly that specifically in the case of crumpled paper it's OK to draw not only cast shadows but also the fold's shadows (what's shown in photos as "Form's Shadow")?
