The whole "what if" thing is not a rule - it's a tool that you can choose to use if you're struggling to find things to draw, or feel like you want your designs and ideas to have more depth to drive them. None of that is required for the 50% rule, where the only requirement is that you draw something, without it being a study, or an exercise, or the end result needing to meet any particular standard of quality.

They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
