Especially on the last page (boxes 12-17) I always end up with the last line being clearly wrong because of the accumulated error. I feel like I know how I'm supposed to avoid it, but just it just "doesn't work out" in practice.

My general approach:

  • Plot the Y and the first line with a rough guess of a vanishing point (since this line doesn't determine it exactly).

  • At this point the second line makes a huge difference in how things work out in the end, so I try to plan out (and mark with a finger) exactly where I imagine the vanishing point to be, then make marks, ghost towards them, and make the line.

  • Continue adding lines within implied vanishing points and constraints.

Problems:

  • Sometimes I just miss the mark (poor accuracy) as I draw it, resulting in an off angle that makes the rest of the box "impossible" to do correctly.

  • Or I just "see it wrong" or "plan it wrong" and the error accumuates.

Not really sure what I should focus on other than "keep doing what I'm doing and it'll improve".

Below this point is mostly ads. Indie projects, and tool/course recommendations from us.
This section is reserved for low-cost advertising space for art related indie projects.
With how saturated the market is, it is tough for such projects to get eyes on their work.
By providing this section, we hope to help with that.

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something we've used ourselves, or know to be of impeccable quality. If you're interested, here is a full list.

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
