Hey, I'll be trying to critique your lesson 1 exercises!

Lines

For the "Superimposed Lines" I see a little bit of fraying at the beginning on some of the lines, but overall you did an amazing job keeping the fraying to a minimum. With more practice you'll get better with more confident lines, and less fraying, since you'll get used to drawing with your shoulder.

For the "Ghosted Lines" and "Ghosted Planes" There is a bit of wobble and arching. I suggest ghosting the lines a few more times. Other than that it looks great, and like I said with the "Superimposed Lines", with more practice your lines overtime will be more confident and accurate.

Ellipses

In the "Tables of Ellipses" Exercise, I see some Ellipses going out of the Rectangle, but not by much, and there are some spaces where you could fill in some more Ellipses. I also see in 1 or 2 Rectangles where you left a little gap between the Ellipses. Nice job with this exercise, you did great with trying to keep the Ellipses in the square, and they also seem confident.

For the "Ellipses in Planes", Some of the Ellipses are going out of the plane, and I also see a few that aren't touching some of the sides of the Plane, but There are also some that look great. I would suggest ghosting the Ellipses until you are confident enough to draw the Ellipse. It's fine if some of the Ellipse goes outside or inside of the plane a little bit. All that should matter is the Ellipse should look confident, smooth, and a majority of the Ellipse touches the sides of the plane like this https://imgur.com/a/z7dnKB3

For "Funnels", The middle Funnels looks great. With the Funnels on top, some of the Ellipses seem to be going through each other, like the top right Funnel, and for the bottom right Funnel there's a gap between the Ellipses. When doing this exercise in the Future try keeping the funnels together like in the middle right funnel, and also the Ellipses could be a bit more smoother.

Boxes

"Plotted Perspective" looks fine

In the "Rough Perspective" I see a lot of repeating lines. Remember "No matter how off a line is, a student should never repeat it, they should kept the line as it if were correct and move on.". You did a good job at keeping the lines parallel to the horizon line and horizontal. Overall you should work on not repeating the lines, which I see you do on the other box exercises too, and is pretty common for a lot of students to do (Including myself currently), and making the box go towards the vanishing point.

the "Rotated Boxes" look fine, but I do see some repeating lines (as stated in the "Rough Perspective" critique).

For the "Organic Perspective" Exercise I still see a lot of repeating lines, and some of the boxes aren't rotating as much as they should be, or they're repeating the same box but smaller/larger like this https://imgur.com/a/eVKfckt. Try placing the Beginning dot at different locations so you don't have the same box every time like this https://imgur.com/a/5NvyC1p , and try changing up the "Y" shape ( For example making a part of the "Y" longer or shorter" forming a "Pizza box" shape or a long box like this https://imgur.com/a/IC3SOiw), which I saw you do a little bit with some of the boxes.

Next Steps:

  • Half a page of "Ellipses in planes".

  • Half a page of "Organic perspective" and half a page of "Rough perspective". Try to not repeat any of the lines.

Good luck!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi!Thank you so much for an in depth critique. Here is the feedback homework: https://imgur.com/a/ViNvoKT. Two pages of each.I mainly tried to focus on not repeating lines. For Organic Perspective" exercise i tried to apply things you critiqued tho i still had little bit of struggle with that one.

Thanks for the revisions!

"Ellipses in planes" look a lot smoother

The "Rough perspective" looks better, and also smoother

In the "Organic perspective" the boxes are rotating more, and they're also seem to be more confident

Also I think repeating lines is fine if you're trying to add line weight, BUT it's not required for Lesson 1.

Congrats on completing Lesson 1, and Good Luck with the rest of Drawabox!!

I'll mark the lesson as complete

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

Right from when students hit the 50% rule early on in Lesson 0, they ask the same question - "What am I supposed to draw?"

It's not magic. We're made to think that when someone just whips off interesting things to draw, that they're gifted in a way that we are not. The problem isn't that we don't have ideas - it's that the ideas we have are so vague, they feel like nothing at all. In this course, we're going to look at how we can explore, pursue, and develop those fuzzy notions into something more concrete.
