I struggled with finding a balance between grinding and moving ahead with this challenge. Many of these boxes are terrible, but when I started trying to get things exactly right, I slowed down almost to a standstill, doing boxes over and over and over. Ugh. I'm submitting them anyway and will really appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Hi there, I'll be handling your box challenge critique.

Congratulations on completing the box challenge, it's not an easy task skill wise or mentally. It requires a lot of patience, it's not particularly fun (although the pay off is worth it) and if you struggle with the idea that everything that needs to be perfect then it can be challenging in that regard as well. I'm glad you were able to make it through to the end without burning out.

While you may be frustrated with your results and may even feel like you haven't made much progress, know that you have shown quite a bit of growth through this challenge.

Your line quality has improved but not in ways that may be immediately obvious given the nature of this challenge. When it comes to your boxes your line weight isn't applied as tidily/confidently as it could be and this results in your boxes' edges being messier than it could be; however if we look at your hatching lines where you're not applying multiple passes to try and fix your mistakes you can see they're looking straighter and more confident which is great. Your hatching lines tend to float as well rather than reach both sides of the box, this combined with your box lines being a bit messy gives me the impression you may be worrying about your accuracy too much. If you're struggling to hit your intended stopping point it's better to overshoot than undershoot and I'd recommend trying to lift your pen from the page rather than stopping on it, this way you keep your line confident and build up muscle memory to determine when to lift at the correct stopping point. When applying line weight we have to be subtle and just like every other line we want to apply it confidently, if we aren't accurate that's fine, confidence is our first priority and accuracy will improve with mileage.

Something I definitely recommend you do is experiment more, besides a few boxes you mostly kept your orientation and proportions fairly similar. Experimentation and mileage are important when we want to deepen our understanding of a concept, if we just draw the same thing box over and over (you didn't here so don't worry, it's just an example) we may become better at drawing that one box but when we are asked to draw another we may have no idea what to do.

You'll also find it beneficial to draw larger, it helps us become more comfortable using our shoulder and allows us to see our mistakes more clearly.

You did experiment a bit with foreshortening which is great, you also became more consistent through the challenge. There is still work to do but you're on the right track, I'll quickly point you to this example. It shows how each line in a set relates to one another, the inner pair being fairly similar and the outer pair varying more depending on how close the vanishing point is to the box. The important thing to remember is that each line effects every other line so we want to be thinking as a set, not in terms of individual lines or pairs. Our sets of lines should never diverge from their vanishing point, and because of perspective they should converge consistently towards their relative vanishing point.

Overall while there is still work to do this is a solid submission. The biggest thing you need to address appears to be your mind set going into these exercises (which is fairly normal), we don't expect perfection and neither should you. We just expect your best attempts and that you follow the instructions, I'm going to be moving you on to the next lesson on the condition that I hope you'll work on your line confidence and continue to experiment with boxes in your warm ups.

You have improved and will continue to do so as long as you try your best. Keep practicing previous exercises as warm ups and good luck in lesson 2!

Next Steps:

Move on to lesson 2.

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thank you so much for the great feedback! I will take it all to heart and keep experimenting with the boxes and working on drawing lines with confidence. I'm excited to start Lesson 2. :)

Drawabox isn't the be-all, end-all of drawing fundamental education. Our approach prioritizes certain concepts over others, and while we believe it do so for good reasons, ultimately it doesn't appeal to everyone. If Drawabox simply doesn't work for you, give Proko's Drawing Basics course a try - at the very least, you'll probably find it to be a hell of a lot more fun.
