Just finished my first digital painting! Outside of Drawabox, I normally just doodle with a pencil on paper, but I recently challenged myself to complete a digital piece in order to get more familiar with the software and work flow. This one is a value study from a reference image. It took a lot of experimenting to figure out which tools to use to get the effect that I wanted, and even though I don't think I succeeded 100% in that effort, I'm still pretty happy with the final result. My only regret with this piece is that I wish I had captured the likeness of the reference better in the sketching phase before I moved on to values--compared to the reference, I can tell that my face is a little too thin and long.

Nevertheless, I am quite proud of what I was able to achieve with this painting. It was a lot of fun to try something that I normally never do, and I definitely learned a lot about working in digital. I'll definitely be doing more personal projects like this moving forward, and would highly recommend that others do the same!

Color and Light by James Gurney

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
