Lesson 5: Applying Construction to Animals
1:31 PM, Sunday May 10th 2020
Hello, here's my submission for lesson 5.
I have learned a lot going through this. I wasn't happy with how it was going at first, so right after the second wolf I decided I'd focus entirely on construction to figure it out as best I can. I avoided all details to leave the construction intact, because I wanted criticism on that.
Slowly but surely, I started to get a grasp on it. I felt was doing far better after a couple of days (I did one page a day, but attempted multiple times before going for the drawing I'd post here). Eventually I decided to experiment a little bit with fur again, but I still wanted to keep the construction as the main focus.
I feel way more confident on having "understood the lesson" and followed the instructions than I did for insects, especially for the last 5-6 pages. However, ultimately, you're the one who's judging here, I'm just expressing my opinion about my own performance.
Finally, it feels like I start to understand why these lessons are titled like "applying construction to animals" and not just "animals". Even though you've said it countless times, it takes to actually dig into it to get it. I basically spent all my time wondering "how can I wrap this thing around that?" instead of copying the references, which is what I used to do before. As a very very welcomed side effect, I discovered that after going through all this, I could draw these animals from memory, change their position and their posture to some extent. That's really cool, and it didn't happen when I was just copying.
