Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
12:41 PM, Friday September 4th 2020
Absolute beginner, hoping for helpful criticism.
Hello!
For lines:
I think you lines look really good. For superimposed lines there isn't too much fraying. For ghosted lines the lines look confident. The ghosted planes also look okay. Though in some places there is arching of the line.
For ellipses:
You ellipses look good. There is some obvious discomfort in the ellipses however that is to be expected at the start. One thing however is that you should always draw over your ellipses. It does help. You have draw about 1 and a half times but it would be best to atleast draw twice completely over the ellipses.
For boxes:
Plotted perspective looks good. However in the rough perspective your lines look quite hesitant. If you can draw confident lines in the lines section you can draw confident lines for this too. Develop the habit of drawing confident lines over wobbly lines. Its okay if it is not "correct". The rotated boxes and the organic boxes look good. I think you are ready to take on the next challenge!
Next Steps:
Well done, you can try the 250 boxes challenge next!
Best of luck
This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.
I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.
No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
