Finally finished lesson 1!
Thanks in advanced for critiquing it! (I hope the photo upload work as hoped)
Hello Paperhat! Congratulations on finishing lesson 1! I'm Strauss and would be pleased to critique your work, hope that they can help you one way or another.
I’ll divided this into 3 major sections:
Lines
Super-imposed lines look great. There’s fraying at the end but as long as it’s not fraying at both ends, and every line is being executed with confidence, you’re good to go.
The Ghosted Lines, are too, being executed with confidence, which is great. In Drawabox, Confidence > Accuracy, and you nailed it well.
For Ghosted Planes, I can see some wobbly lines here and there, but overall okay! You also take advantage of all the space that the page has given, plus, planes are being drawn in various sizes and angles, there’s variety in there, so nice job.
Ellipses
For Ellispses in Planes - Sometimes your ellipses either aren’t touching the corner or went over the base plane, but your ellipses are all being executed with confidence, so great job! (For ellipses, we prefer their smoothness/roundness over accuracy).
Tables Of Ellipses, overall great, and you follow the instruction fairly well: Executed the ellipses with confidence, super-imposed them 2-3 times, and fit them tightly within the table bound.
The Funnels are great too. The minor axis being placed correctly, properly cut the ellipses in half. Confident lines.
Boxes
Plotted Perspective: solid work, you also use hatching to emphasize the planes that are facing the viewer, overall good.
For Rough Perspective: Lines are a bit wobbly here and there, but overall great! Keep in mind that "width lines should be parallel to horizon and height lines perpendicular to the horizon”
Rotated Boxes :First, take a look at the full example of “how it should look like”: https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/example, “Guessing” https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/guessing & “Not drawing through” https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/notdrawingthrough
Also check this Imgur link, I noted a few things in there: https://imgur.com/a/XtA8Qcg
Of course, mistakes are bound to be happen, and I assure you, Rotated Boxes is one of if not the most hardest exercise in Lesson 1. Though, I’ll for a revision for this one, you can check ScyllaStew’s video and watching her while you’re drawing, it would help a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7s6TvvlZmo
Overall, you did great! I will ask for another 1 page of Rotated Boxes though, make sure you double-checked all the links in which I gave.
Next Steps:
1 page of Rotated Boxes.
Hey Strauss!
First up I want to thank you for taking time out of your day and helping a random stranger on the internet (that's me :D). I really appreciate it!
Here is the link to my redone rotated boxes: https://imgur.com/a/HR0PQsA
I feel like this attempt is better and I constantly checked out the sources you linked me (thank you for that, made it easier to open everything at once), though it still feels not rotated enough :/
Is this version good enough or should I try again?
All in all your critique helped me a lot to go over everything and (hopefully) get a better understanding. Thank you!
Sorry for the late reply! I was a bit busy with work haha, but yeah it's fine don't mention it! Helping people makes me happy c:
For the revision, yes, you did very well! You cover most of the issues that I mentioned before, and honestly there's nothing to criticize in here. I will mark this lesson as completed, so you can now tackle the infamous 250 Box Challenge.
I recommend using Lesson 1 exercises as 15-30mins warm-ups before diving into the boxes. Good luck mate!
Next Steps:
250 Box Challenge.
Perfect, thanks again!
Onto 250 boxes I go! :D
Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
