Just finished all exercises for lesson 1. I accidentally did two funnels exercises so I include them both here. Would love some feedback! I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer!

Hey Astridaa! I'll be taking a look at your submission.

Let's go over each section:

Lines

Your lines are smooth & confident.

  • When doing curves it does fray on both sides, please make sure to have the same starting point when doing them but don't let it worry you too much as it can be improved over time.

  • You'll need to work on your ghosted lines as it seems to extend way beyond the opposite end. You should try raising your pen(hand) away from the paper as soon as you reach the other end, you can try doing this even when ghosting them.

  • Good work on ghosted planes. It has the same issues from ghosted lines, so obviously improving it will result in better planes.

Ellipses

Just like your lines, almost all of your ellipses are confident & smoothly drawn.

  • No issues in table of ellipses & funnels, nice work.

  • Couple of your ellipses in planes are touching wrong spot of the planes but the accuracy will come as you keep practicing it.

Boxes

Here is a little question before my critique on your Boxes. Were you using ghosting method for boxes in rough, organic perspective & rotated box? If you were, then congrats!! you improved your ghosted lines because I can't seem to notice any extended mark with the edges of your boxes.

  • Your plotted perspective is looking great with overlapping boxes & correct lines toward the vanishing points.

  • Boxes in rough perspective are converging almost toward the vanishing point as intended.

  • You can improve your rotated boxes by gradually rotating the boxes rather than drastically changing it. Notice the change in visible portion of the top faces on the boxes adjacent to the initial box in center & how the outside boxes did not follow along. Because of this you missed out on drawing the boxes on each corner.

  • Your organic perspective is good enough to proceed, they don't always converge toward the vanishing points right now but you'll improve on this when doing next challenge.

You'll improve your boxes a lot when doing the Box Challenge, so don't let my critique worry you too much.

Overall you've done these exercises as intended. Your ghosted lines could use some extra practice. Know this! they're at the base of this course, so improving on it will greatly ease the exercise to come.

Thank you so much! Can't tell you how grateful I am to see such a long and detailed review! That is really helpful! And here's the link to my extra pages for ghosted lines:https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1-DFY9oyneKojpHSqmWm8_8MQaWV13sK8

Sorry for the format, I had some trouble uploading images on imgur so I can only use google drive.

To answer the question, yes, I did use the ghosting method with later exercises. when I was drawing these boxes I focused so much on accuracy and I realized I can achieve more accuracy by ghosting and drawing the line much more slowly. But I feel like I'm kinda sacrificing the smoothness of the lines by doing so, the lines just get a lot more wobbly(this can be clearly seen in the rough perspective exercises)nd the same problem is bugging me now when I'm half way through the 250 boxes challenges. So my question is, how should I approach it during the box challenges? Should I focus more on the accuracy or the smoothness of the lines or I'm simply doing it the wrong way?

These ghosted lines came out great, some are little wobbly but most of them are smoothly drawn.

To answer your question, drawing smooth confident lines should always be the first priority, accuracy will come naturally. Saw your work on rough perspective again, and sure it's not perfect but it's actually not bad, so don't be so hard on yourself. What matters is that you understood the exercise & if you've doubts in any of them, just focus more on them in warm ups.

Congrats! You've completed lesson 1.

Next Steps:

You can now start 250 Box Challenge, it will take a month or so to finish all 250 boxes, so take it easy & don't rush them.

Keep rotating lesson 1 exercises in your warm ups, if some exercises(like rotated box) take too much time, then do just a portion of them. Good Luck!!!

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
