Took a short break around box 200 so quality dropped for a little bit I feel. In general, pretty happy with my progress during this challenge. Although nothing is exceptional, I'm just glad I was able to finish the challenge.

Hello, I'm here to critique your 250 Box Challenge submission.

First, you should be proud you finished the challenge. Drawing 250 boxes is no small feat and proves your dedication to improvement.

Your lines are well-done. They are clearly ghosted and don't arc or wobble. You don't have an issue with over- or undershooting your lines.

It is good you added the optional hatching. It's good lines practice and is very useful in later exercises. These lines are more prone to arcing or falling short their destination. Follow the same steps of the ghosting method for these lines as you would any other line. In DaB, every line is treated as equally important. It looks like you initially added line weight. It is far too heavy, remember it should just be a single stroke on top of the initial line. It is a subtle touch to help the viewer, but it shouldn't be so noticeable. It looks like you started to add it again later in the challenge, done more subtly. It is pretty inaccurate and occasionally looks wobbly. I would guess this is simply due to needing more practice, remember to keep up with your Superimposed Lines in warm-ups and ghost the the line you're adding weight to thoroughly before laying laying down the stroke.

Your box construction improves wonderfully throughout the challenge. Your experiment with varying box dimensions, orientations, and degrees of convergence. You do appear to favor very dramatic convergence more than shallow convergence. Shallow convergence is more commonly useful, due to it being used for objects at human scale. You do have some issues with the back corner, but it clearly improves and is close to accurately converging on many boxes. You might want to try this method to improve your understanding of a box's lines as one big relationship:

Since most of your boxes converge very dramatically, I am going to ask you complete 20 more boxes in shallow perspective. I will critique these and then mark the lesson complete. I know this may be discouraging, but being able to draw boxes in shallow perspective is really important in later lessons. I would review the section on this in the lesson.

Next Steps:

Draw 20 more boxes, in shallow perspective.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,

Thanks for the critiques! I was a little bit late on seeing the notification as I don't frequently check the DaB website so the revisions also took a bit longer. Sorry about that. But anyways, I just finished them today and you can access them through the same google drive link (here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pUnKS4mA2BFldNx4Fsk5Iub0KIx7tRPP?usp=sharing) where the revisions should be at the very bottom.

Excellent work, your convergences are mostly great. Even the back corner has improved significantly.

Your line work seems less confident here, more prone to arcing and wobbling. Remember to keep up with your warmups and always prioritize confidence over accuracy.

Congratulations, I am pleased to mark your 250 Box Submission complete.

Next Steps:

Lesson 2 is next.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

Thanks for all the feedback! This batch felt slightly worse in line quality, I'll definitely keep working on line quality. I fiddled around with the two methods of box making and to be honest I don't really know which one feels better to me yet (I probably just need to try the other method you mentioned a little more).

Marco Bucci's got a ton of great courses available on proko.com, including some of the best videos you can find on using colour and light. Since a lot of our students want to break into working with digital painting however, I thought this course in particular would be a great start to get into the weeds with how to navigate the confusing world of layers, brushes, and more.

This course highlights programs across the full spectrum of options, ranging from the current industry standard Adobe Photoshop, to the Free-and-Open-Source darling Krita, as well as the mobile favourite, Procreate.
