Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 2 homework.

Organic Arrows

-Starting with the organic arrows they are drawn with confidence, which really helped you to capture the way they flow through space, you are also making some good attempts at the perspective of the ribbon, however I noticed that you have a bit of trouble controlling the width of the ribbon, as it doesn’t get wider as it moves closer to the viewer, it remains fairly consistent throughout their whole length and in other cases it shrinks. One thing that you can do is to try to draw your marks much slower while maintaining good confidence. This will give you better control. Aside from that you seem to be aware that the negative space between the zigzagging sections of the ribbon gets narrower as it moves further away from the viewer. Your use of lineweight is good and just keep in mind that you have to reserve it to clarify how forms overlap, and avoid applying it on any particularly long strokes.

Organic Forms

-The shape of your sausages is coming along nicely and you have avoided any pinching or or swelling throughout their length, when it comes to the contour ellipses they are drawn with a good deal of confidence and you are aware of the degree shift as they move throughout space, the contour curves are moving in the right direction, there are only a few instances where they seem to be fairly consistent but the important thing to remember is that contour lines are a useful tool to describe how a form sits in 3D space , but they can easily work against us by flattening our drawing.

The best thing to do is using the ghosting method to think about each individual mark’s purpose and what it is going to contribute to the drawing, this way you will avoid drawing any contours that do not add any useful information.

Texture

-On the texture analysis I am pleased to see a bold use of ink to fill the cast shadows, this definitely helped you to

achieve a smoother transition from dense to sparse.

In the dissections you have done an equally good job focusing only on the cast shadows and breaking the silhouette of the sausages to imply the presence of those tiny details. I also want to quickly redirect you to this diagram, https://imgur.com/oAx2pRD which shows that when we are working with thin-like-textures it is better to first outline the shadow shape and then fill it in, this helps us to achieve a more dynamic result than simply drawn lines.

Form Intersections

–On the form intersections you are doing a great job keeping the foreshortening shallow and keeping the size of the forms consistent in order to make it seem as if the forms were sharing the same space, there are only a few forms that are too small. When it comes to the intersections themselves, don’t worry if you feel like you don’t fully grasp them yet as we will be going over them in future lessons.

Organic Intersections

-Finishing with the organic intersections, you have kept the shape of the sausages easy and simple to work with which is the best strategy to produce good results.

The main thing I want to call out is that you are not pushing the cast shadows far enough and they seem to be mostly hugging the form that is casting them, so try to push them a bit further and give them a nice curve. And lastly it seems that you are not drawing through all of your sausages , so don’t forget to draw through all of them so you can get the most out of these exercises.

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.
