Some thoughts on my current practice:

Ghosted Lines

I seem to make a lot of last minute correction when I did not reach the dot I set up. So you might see a little wobble at the end. Also I tend to overshoot sometime or even missed my destination. Still not used to lifting up my arm to make it stop haha.

Ghosted Ellipses / Planes

Sometime wobble around on the middle and I still did the last minute correction when making the ghosted line. For the Ellipses, I seem to either be too fast or not focused enough. Resulting in the different size of ellipses for every ellipses. Also some ellipses seems to be outside the plane.

Table of Ellipses

Some of the ellipses curved in a weird way. Some ellipses was out of the box and repeated ellipses sometime have different sizes.

Funnels

I used a strawberry jar (it was empty :P) so it might look uneven a little bit. But I still repeat the mistake of repeated ellipses having different sizes. Some of the ellipses did not reach the edge.

Rough Perspective

I learned that a steep angle makes the pen's ink less thick. Also, a lot of the lines I made for the box wasn't confident. It is a bit hard to make it since some of the boxes are too small. But I'm pretty happy my rough estimation wasn't too far off.

Rotated Box

The central boxes are too small, resulting all adjacent boxes having small size as well. Sorry about that. To fix that, I tried increasing their sizes which resulted in some weird result where the rotated box felt uneven. Some too small, or too big. Those dots are used as a rough estimation for the vanishing point. I moved it a little bit every rotation and some older vanishing point are used for boxes that are rotated.

Organic Perspective

I tried rotating the "Y" clockwise to make the box rotate. It resulted in me making an uneven "Y", which caused some boxes to look like they have extreme foreshortening. Also, the line I created tend to collide with each other making some of the size look weird. Closer things sometime smaller than the farther one.

I hope to receive your critique :D I'll try to be active inside the discord critique exchange.

Hi, I will be critiquing your work.

  • You’re right about the wobbles on your lines, remember that it is always more important to focus on confidence than accuracy so it’s important to fully commit to the line, and it’s alright to overshoot the lines, accuracy will build on top of confidence. Just take your time and it will get better.

  • I noticed that your lines for the superimposed lines exercise tend to arc a lot (the ones where you are going, it does look like it gets better on the other exercises. Remember to ghost and arc to the opposite direction for future lessons and eventually your lines will stop arching.

  • Most of your ellipses actually look confident enough, if you’re struggling to focus while trying to ghost them take some time to relax before committing to it.

  • Remember that ellipses should only be drawn over2 or 3 times. While this is the most noticeable thing I see from your ellipses, I don’t think it is too big of a concern, just keep it in mind for future Drawabox exercises.

  • Sometimes your ellipses in the table are not touching each other. This is more noticeable for the ones that are separated by wavy sections. Again, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, just keep it in mind if you want to redo this exercise as a warmup.

  • It’s alright to have some of your ellipses go outside of the boundary box or be in different sizes. It’s a common issue for most lesson 1 submissions and from what I’ve seen it’s not very noticeable, so keep it up!

  • For the funnels exercise, I’m not exactly sure what you mean by ellipses not reaching the edges. Is it about not having the ellipses go further out? I don’t think that is a mistake so you don’t have to worry too much.

  • For the rough perspective exercise, you should keep the width parallel to the horizon and the height perpendicular to it. It looks like this is just because of your lines wobbling and arcing, just keep it in mind for future exercises.

  • I haven’t seen someone use vanishing points while doing the rotated boxes exercise before, I don’t think it has a large exercise but in my opinion it’s better to not plot them on the paper.

  • There are perspective issues and mistakes for rotated boxes and organic perspective, but you will work more on it on the 250 boxes challenge, so you shouldn’t worry too much about it.

And that’s it! I think you are ready to move on and continue to the 250 box challenge. I really liked the notes you added to the submission, other ones usually just leave their submission blank so it’s nice to see your thought process and why you made certain decisions.

Good luck on the 250 boxes challenge!

Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 boxes challenge. Remember to not rush, take breaks often, and apply the 50/50 rule. If you have any questions you can ask through the Questions / Discussions page on the home page of Drawabox or the discord server (in #basic-challenges). If you have any questions feel free to reply to me.

Hey, thanks a lot for the critique! I'll try to be more confident as it seems to be the biggest issue. Hope you have a nice day

Cottonwood Arts Sketchbooks

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
