Restarting Official Critique after two years

10:32 PM, Thursday October 9th 2025

Hello, as the title suggests. i've been off drawabox for around two years and pior to leaving i was on the official critique path and i was wondering on if i should reread through all the material and do the homework again. i have heard of this rule of thumb https://imgur.com/a/vl2gIRQ but im unsure if it applies to the official critique path, before i left i was past the 250 box challenge moving onto lesson 2

Sincerely Ages

Hey Ages.

I myself actually just restarted after a two year break. I had only completed lesson 1 and I went straight to the 250 box challenge (which I just received my official feedback on. It was overall positive, and it is now marked complete ;).

But this actually sounds like a good approach. Had I read the post you linked, I think I would have followed the advice. I did re-read the information on the 250 box challenge, as it had changed quite a lot, but not the posts up until that point.

I do think that due to the nature of the 250 box challenge, it's probably a little easier to jump straight into than one of the actual lessons.

I am now starting lesson 2, and I feel ready (since I just drew 250 boxes ;), but think I might actually go back and review the information from lesson 1 and spend a little time on some of the warm up exercises. I'm not gonna spend two weeks, though... ;)

I don't know if that's helpful at all, but those are my thoughts... ;)

Good luck!

That rule of thumb does apply generally, and therefore to official critique as well. The main point there is ensuring that students aren't just pushing forward while having forgotten critical information, and since that approach involves reviewing all the material then it does take care of that.

Of course if you want to start over, you certainly can. After being away for a year and more without keeping up with warmups in the interim, it certainly becomes a valid option, but not a required one.

Hello!

I used to be on the same page, but dont worry. Whatever you have finished and delivered for official critique is still valid, and you should continue where you left off. You should also keep doing the past exercises as part of your warmups to keep yourself fresh and sharp, but thats about it.

Cheers!

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

On the flipside, they tend to be on the cheaper side of things, so if you're just getting started (beginners tend to have poor pressure control), you're probably going to destroy a few pens - going cheaper in that case is not a bad idea.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
