Hello, My names Saif and I will be going over your 250 cylinder challenge critique.

Overall I love what I see here, generally around this stage students don't have any problems with their line confidence and ghosting which is quite apparent here as I didn't spot any place where you were inconsistent or hesitant to draw your lines. GOOD JOB!

First 150:

I didn't spot any major problems here, the ellipses get smaller as it gets more foreshortened and they are also drawn through nicely twice. One thing i did spot is that at times your cylinders have this weird curve to them like number 79. I think this is cause you subconsciously switched to your elbow to draw your lines here which in turn resulted in them being a bit curved especially in longer cylinders. So moving on I want you to practice some really long ghosted planes in your daily warmups using your shoulder, As you know in the latter lessons the goal is to learn to use the whole arm and use the perfect tool for the job, here in really long cylinders or lines in general It's best to use the shoulder.

Last 100:

This was good overall but there were some mistakes that I noticed, Keeping the arms of your Y the same length for instance, This is unfortunately pretty hard to do freehand but one thing that might help if to place your pen flat on the page and measure the lengths that way. It does improve over time so no worries here, I do think you shy away from drawing ellipses at times and draw ovals instead, e.g box 99, 87, 83,78,61,62 etc. I went over these here and marked it out, otherwise I like what I see here.

Next Steps:

You are free to move onto lesson 6 and finally start tackling the harder lessons! Good luck! And I hope you have a wonderful day!

Cottonwood Arts Sketchbooks

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
