Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
5:08 AM, Sunday February 23rd 2020
Hey new here just started about a day ago, and have finished lesson 1, and submitting for review.
Welcome~
Nice job on the lines section- it looks good!
The ellipses in the table of ellipses exercise are quite confident, but you’ll not always rotate around them 2 full times- be sure to! Also, be mindful of their degrees/tilts- ellipses inside of a frame share those. In the ellipses in planes exercise they’ll sometimes come out a little pointy, so be careful you’re not so focused on goal #2, making sure they touch all 4 sides of the plane, that you forget about goal #1, making sure they’re confident, and rounded. Nice job on the funnels~
The rough perspective exercise looks good, but, since you’re making an effort to hatch the exact same face every time, you’ll sometimes hatch on that’s facing away from us, thus making the box look really strange. This is, of course, not an issue, hatching being optional here, but it will count as a mistake in the box challenge, so it’s worth a mention. Be careful, by the way, not to correct incorrect lines. If they’re wrong, they’re wrong. The rotated boxes exercise looks good, though you’re missing the 4 corner-most boxes. Finally, the organic perspective exercise looks good, too, though the foreshortening of the boxes isn’t always consistent, but, again, don’t redo lines. Also, it’s important that the lines that are being hidden, because they’re being overlapped by another box, are still visible. It’s super valuable to do this to form a proper understanding of 3D space. Plenty of that in your next step, though~
Congrats on finishing!
Next Steps:
250 Box Challenge
This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.
Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
