Here's my homework for lesson one! I struggled a lot during this process and just straight out started to get frustrated at this. When I got to the rotated boxes I just kind of stopped worrying about it being great and focused on doing my best and following the instructions which has been a huge relief on me. I hope that these assignments are good enough! Thank you for the lessons and knowledge :O)

Hello and congrats on completing lesson 1. I'll be looking over your submission today. Your superimposed lines are off to a decent start. You do seem to be trying to keep a clearly defined starting point on these. You don't have a lot of a control yet so you are getting some significant tapering on some of these which is normal and will improve with practice. Your ghosted lines and planes turned out pretty good. You are doing a good job using the ghosting method and drawing from your shoulder although there are some places where I am seeing some wobble. This typically happens because you begin focusing a bit more on accuracy or revert to drawing from the wrist. Your accuracy isn't that great yet which is perfectly normal and is something you build towards with more and more practice.

Your table of ellipse exercise turned out quite well! You are doing a great job drawing through your ellipses and are focusing on getting smooth consistent ellipse shapes. This is carried over very nicely into your ellipses in planes exercises. It's good that you are focusing more on getting a smooth ellipse shape instead of very accurately trying to cram your ellipses into the planes. As I said earlier accuracy is something you built towards one you can achieve smooth shapes and confident linework. Your ellipses in funnels came out pretty decent as well. You are having some slight issues with your ellipses tilting of the minor axis but these look pretty good for the most part. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/notaligned There's still room for improvement with your ellipses but these are a great start.

Plotted perspective looks fine nothing to mention here. The rough perspective boxes are having some issues with wobbly linework which I mentioned earlier and this is a common a lot of students run into with this exercise. I think it's a combination of having to think through the spatial problems you are facing here and the shorter lines which ends up having people either skipping parts of the ghosting method or they seem to revert back to drawing with their wrist. So just a reminder to always ghost your lines and to draw from the shoulder with confidence. Even on short lines like these. You did a good job extending the lines back on your boxes to check your work. Some of your perspective estimations were quite off but that will get better with practice.

Your rotated box exercise came out pretty decently all things considered. Once again I think you are getting some wobbly linework for the same reasons I mentioned with the rough perspective boxes. You did a great job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent. You are still struggling quite a bit with the spatial thinking required for this exercise and in some cases you aren't actually rotating your boxes but are simply moving them back into perspective which is a common problem people have with this exercise. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/notrotating I do want to mention of the hatching you did for this. Some of it appears very rushed and chicken scratchy and if you are going to use hatching during these lessons you should treat it the same as every other lines you draw where you ghost it first and then draw with confidence. Finally, your organic box exercise turned out okay. Your linework feels a bit more confident here but you are running into some pretty serious box convergence issues which you will be getting a lot of practice with during the 250 box challenge.

This was a really good submission that showed a lot of growth as you worked through these exercises. I think your ellipses in particular are in a very good place to build from. The biggest issue I see is that you seem to either skip ghosting or revert to drawing from your wrist when you are drawing things that require more difficult spatial thinking so that is something you will want to work on. Otherwise I think you are understanding most of the concepts these lessons are trying to teach very well. I'm going to mark this as complete and good luck with the 250 box challenge. Keep up the good work!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thank you! reading this helped me understand my issues, most of which comes from the lack of ghosting my lines especially in parts where it does require more spatial thinking. I'll try to keep this in mind when I do the 250 Box Challenge! Thank you.

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
