Lesson 2: Contour Lines, Texture and Construction
4:43 PM, Saturday September 25th 2021
Note: My fineliners started to dry up near the end, so I apologize for the low line quality.
Hello Racisback, I hope you are well,
Starting with your arrows, you are properly overlapping and applying perspective to them, but what I wanna point out is that you are twisting arrows at the ends, which breaks the feel of perspective, because our brains do not have enough information to know what is going on. More on that in this imgur that I made https://imgur.com/a/JLCs2z4
Moving onto your sausages, you showed the degree of ellipses changing quite well and you stick to simple sausages which is also a proper thing to do, but some of them don't fit the characteristics of simple sausage. Keep in mind that both ends should be equal in size. Few of them don't fit that criteria, But that is the only mistake to point out here, you are properly hooking your contours and aligning them to the overall flow of the sausages, great done by you here.
Continuing to texture analysis, you definitely spent a good amount of time designing those. In your 2nd row you draw confident and smooth lines, which tells me that you spent enough time observing the references. But what I noticed is that in your last row your transition is not as smooth as I would wish. So I recommend reading those notes for clarity about what I am talking about.
Your dissection are quite well done (Squid is my fav one of the bunch), you are minding the curvature of the sausages and you also break it. But I do feel like some of them are less detailed than others, which could mean that you didn't spend as much time as needed to look at references. The longer we draw without looking at the reference the more our brain simplifies that subject. Keep in mind to look at your reference every few strokes, for now you should look more than you draw, it takes a lot of time to be able to hold information in our brain for longer. https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/2/observation
There is also a problem of your sausages not being the same size on both ends as said in the previous section.
Coming onto your form intersection, I feel like you missed a few intersections here. Overall you are making visible progress throughout the exercise, but you are grouping your form a little too much. Additionally there is a lot of empty space, which could be used to gain more experience in 3d space and even if our intersection is small and hard to draw, still do it.
Lastly, your organic intersection is definitely looking solid, it shows that you understand their relationship in shape. Also good usage of contours. But in future try to avoid the "mother ship", we want to keep all the sausages similar in size, which will allow for more useful exploration of their interactions in space. Additionally be more mindful of your shadows, as few of them don't follow the form and feel flat.
In conclusion, you did a good job absorbing the material. There weren't any major mistakes in your submission so I am going to mark this lesson as complete. Keep in mind things that I wrote for later lessons.
If you didn't tell me about your fineliner dying I wouldn't notice that, so no need to apologize.
If you have any question feel free to ask,
Have fun during your journey,

Continue to lesson 3.
A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.
In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
