Hello! Good job finishing the lesson. Let's get it critiqued!
Lines
- Superimposed Lines
Good, fraying only on one side, which is expected and fine. Some wobble - this can be mitigated with focusing on the end point of the stroke and executing confidently.
- Ghosted Lines
Well done, with some slight wobbling here as well. Again, more confident execution should help this. Once the pen touches the paper, commit to the stroke, there should be no hesitation. It can't hurt to remind yourself to use the shoulder for the strokes as well, just in case.
A few cases of arcing, you can try to counteract this by consciously arcing the line the opposite way slightly, which will become less conscious over time and compensate.
- Ghosted Planes
Not a lot of issues that weren't in the previous exercise, which makes me believe you took your time with this and didn't rush. Good job! Suggestions from previous exercise apply.
Ellipses
- Tables of Ellipses
These are drawn through 2-3 times as required, laid out snugly against the borders of the table and each other, which is good.
Some wobbly and uneven ones here and there. Taking more time to ghost thoroughly and being mindful of executing confidently from the shoulder without hesitation should help.
- Ellipses in Planes
These are done pretty well, drawn through, effort was made to try and make them touch all four sides. Some came out a little deformed as a result, trying to fit into the planes; you shouldn't worry about fitting them too much, just focus on the confident execution of an even, smooth shape first. Same suggestions as the previous exercise.
- Funnels
Ellipses are drawn through, aligned with the minor axis and kept snugly against each other. The only issue is that some are spilling out beyond the sides of the funnel; do your best to keep ellipses snug inside in the future!
Boxes
- Plotted Perspective
All done correctly. Some vertical back edges are slanted, which is expected and should be minimized by taking more time to align the ruler.
- Rough Perspective
Looks good to me. Some lines are slanted, taking more time to ghost lines thoroughly should help avoid this in the future.
- Rotated Boxes
You did the core setup correctly, drew through the boxes, kept the gaps nice and consistent, and applied rotation well.
However, you seem to have forgotten to draw the four outermost boxes in each corner. I trust you to finish them without requesting a revision, as you seem to have understood the exercise well enough. Just make sure not to rush these.
- Organic Perspective
You did well to keep the boxes consistent, scale them with depth, and refrain from dramatic foreshortening. I notice a few cases of parallel edges diverging rather than converging, though. I suggest revising this part of the Rough Perspective exercise to avoid this in moving to the 250 boxes challenge.
In conclusion: You did pretty well. I believe you're good to move on to 250 boxes after finishing the missing Rotated Boxes.
Next Steps:
Finish Rotated Boxes, add Lesson 1 exercises to your warmups pool, and onwards to the 250 boxes challenge.
Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens
Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.
Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
