I just finished Lesson1 and would like some critique on it. Should I already move to the 250 box challenge? What exercises should I do again or focus on the warmups moving on?

Thank you for your time!

Hi Ivanazevedoart,

Superimposed lines - Make sure you take time to align your pen tip with the starting tip when ghosting and before you draw your line.

Ghosted lines - Again, not alinging your pen to the starting point is a major issue here. Many of your lines you did this confidently. Others suffer from the mentioned issue. I would recommend using your page space to do more ghosted lines. Please try to fill up your page.

Ghosted planes - Your lines got much better here. I am impressed. You took the time to align your pen tip to the starting point.

Tables of ellipses - These will get better with time! Nice job! What helped me was taking the time to ghost more. I would focus on quality over quantity. Meaningful practice over time will help you here.

Ellipses in planes -Your ellipses are good! I can see that you drew through them a couple of times! Nice Job! ????

Ellipses in funnels - They look good to me. It appears your ellipse quality got much better here.

Plotted perspective - When using a ruler to plot your sides back to the vanishing point, they should touch the vanishing point if possible. In some of these, it appears you did not do this. In others, it appears you did. Please rememeber this when you practice it in the future.

Rough perspective - Many of your lines are good and you followed it correctly. Please remember the width lines should be parallel to horizon and the height lines should be perpendicular to horizon.

Rotated boxes - Not an insult, but you did this exercise incorrectly. This is known to be extremely difficult, but I know you can do it. Please refer to https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes and use the completed homework example as a reference to help you here.

Organic perspective - Some of your boxes are more rectangular than others, but good job overall. You will get better at this after you complete the 250 box challenge in the future.

Good job overall and I know you can do it,

Lars

Next Steps:

Next Steps:

1 page of Superimposed lines (remember to align your pen tip to the starting dot when ghosting and before you hit or go through your ending dot)

1 page of Ghosted lines (again remember the pen tip alignment issue)

1 page of Rotated boxes (I also messed this up the first time around, I know you can do it. Please reread the information about the rotated boxes on drawabox.com and use the completed homework as a reference)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

No problem! Your superimposed lines are great! Nice job taking up the entire page! I can tell you took the time to line up your pen! Same with your ghosted lines! Great job! Your rotated boxes are really looking good! You represented the boxes in 3D space spectacularly. All of your lines look confident! You blew it out of the park for a begineer! You are ready for the next challenge Ivanazevedoart.

Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge.

Hi!

Your lines look pretty confident and smooth. The elipses look also nice and confident. Some of them aren’t kept in the bounds. I would suggest you add exercises like funnels or ghosted planes to your warm-up. In the rough perspective exercise you have some mistakes witch perspective, but you should not worry about this as you will train perspective in the 250 box challenge.

In the rotated boxes exercise I noticed that your boxes aren’t really rotating. Here's what I mean:

Ps: I don't know what happend in the next steps section. I meant that you should do the rotated boxes exercise again.

Next Steps:

You would recommend that you do the rotated boxes exercise again. But overall good job!

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you so much! Noticed that in the rotated boxes something was off, will do it again. Thanks again.

Glad I could help you! I'll be waiting for it.

Hi again! Can you see if there's any gigantic error in my 2nd try on those rotated boxes? Link here.

I also included two more pages of some lines that was recommended by Lars (Thank you again too), if you could take a look it would be very helpful.

Thanks again.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
