Hi,

This is my first submission to drawabox. I finished the first lesson in about 4 days.

I didn't have coloured pens, so I drew the lines in pencil for the rough perspective assignment.

Sometimes it is hard for me to concentrate, I think that really shows in the outcome.

Anyways, I look forward to hearing your feedback!

All the best

Hi Dodomon! Here's my critique of your homework:

Lines

Your lines are done very nicely. They're confidently drawn and you're generally accurate with your lines. A few of the superimposed lines fray on both sides, but you seemed to have gotten the hang of it by the second page. I also notice that some lines are repeated, especially during the boxes exercises. I would encourage you to not correct a line, no matter how bad it looks, and instead accept the mistake and move on. It's painful, but a must when it comes to embracing your mistakes and learning from them.

Ellipses

Looks good as well, none of them are visibly out of bounds or overlapping each other. I would've experimented a little more with dividing the spaces in the Tables of Ellipses exercise, but you did a good job at keeping consistent angles, staying in bounds, and drawing each ellipse confidently.

Boxes

You did great on Plotted Perspective. However, you made the mistake of plotting your depth lines (drawn in pencil) back to the vanishing point on your Rough Perspective drawings when the depth lines should extend straight towards the horizon line. Keep in mind that the exercise's purpose is to understand how lines behave on their own and to improve your estimation. Those depth lines show you how far off you were from the vanishing point. As for the Rotated Boxes exercise, the boxes don't seem to be converging hard enough, notably on the left side. Regardless, these boxes are really well drawn and your Organic Perspective work was done great for a beginner.

You say it was hard for you to concentrate well, but I think you did awesome on Lesson 1! There's tiny flaws here and there, but judging on how you did, these will be diminished quickly as you continue into the later lessons and challenges... but I do ask of you to revise the Rough Perspective work in order to completely understand the exercise.

Next Steps:

A revision of the "Rough Perspective" exercise. (You did the depth lines in pencil, so hopefully it won't be too much of a problem to fix that)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you for the thorough feedback!

I also noticed that I made a mistake in the rough perspective exercise while looking through the forum.

Luckily I drew the lines in pencil, so I could replace them.

Again, great job on completing lesson one! Your next stage is the 250 Box Challenge.

Next Steps:

Take on the 250 Box Challenge. It might take a while, but you'll learn a whole ton from it.

Additionally, I encourage giving critiquing a try. Not only does it help solidify the concepts you've already learned, but it lessens the amount of submissions sent in and people could reach your submission faster. It's completely optional, but I highly recommend it.

Here's a guide that helps if you feel a bit lost: https://pastebin.com/dYnFt9PQ

Have fun on the 250 Box Challenge, and I wish you good luck on the rest of your draw-a-box ventures.

(Yeah, i only saw Fracedi's review after I was done reviewing.Yep, i did that)

Alright, let's go.

Overall ,it's good and you did all that was supposed to be done.

I believe Rough Perspective requires only a fine line pen of one color or a standard pen though? You don't need different colors , and it's extremely important you do every exercise with pens though.

Your boxes should aim to be straight and parallel (rough perspective). Smoothness of the line is the most important thing right now, it'll be necessary for the other more difficult exercises. (I think? I've only done up to 250 boxes challenge lol).

You can do the 250 boxes challenge. Not related, to help you focus please try doing the Pomororo Technique, it rewards your brain for focusing on one task, very efficient.

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
