Hi,

I really appreciate all honest feedback and thoughts. I included additional pages for a few exercises that I repeated and also included some beginning pages of the 250 box challenge to make sure that I understand the instructions/purpose correctly.

Thanks again,

Tom

Hi Thrabchak,

here to give you some feedback regarding your lesson 1 homework :)

Some clarification before my critique:

*Normally, it’s not intended to continue with the box challenge without previous critique of lesson 1. That’s why I won’t critique those.

Next time, invest your spare time into the 50% rule as explained here: https://drawabox.com/lesson/0/2/50percent*

Lines

Your lines arch and bend a bit. Internalize to draw lines from your shoulder. You can also experiment with rotating your sheet. Yet, they will improve with practice.

Great accuracy at the start of your lines, a bit of fraying towards the end. Good work.

Ellipses

Some of your ellipses look rushed as in you could have drawn them through another round and go beyond the expected frame.

Make use of the ghosting method to stay within your frame.

Funnels

A few of them were not cut in half by the minor axis, watch out for that over the course of the next lessons.

Additionally, your funnels could have started more narrow, allowing you to add more variations of ellipses while increasing their angle.

Plotted perspective

Enjoyed your work here. Great accuracy and clean look. A recommendation for the future would be to use line weight to highlight how the boxes are positioned among each other.

Rough perspective

A few of your lines look rushed, take your time and plan them properly. A few of them a wobbly which could result from missing confidence.

Invest into your ghosting method to keep them improving.

Great how they converge into the same direction.

Rotated box

Great result. Again, line weight and/or some hatching would amplify your work. Just to give you some ideas on how to improve.

Organic perspective

Some of your lines look like you drew them more than once - a tendency to correct is normal. To combat it, invest into your ghosting (again).

In summary, you showed great progress - keep that up with your next lessons!

Next Steps:

Congrats - time for challenge ;)

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
