Lesson 1 Homework Submission

I gotta tell you I'm pretty damn excited to be able to move on to the 250 box challenge.

This first lesson certainly helped me better understand the basics of line making, especially through ghosting, but the final exercises really helped cement how much extra practice I need for 3 dimensional space to become instilled in mind's eye.

If you have any critiquing to make regarding my submission, I'd very much appreciate some feedback!

In any case, I hope you have a lovely day, and a great time drawing.

Hey there!

First of all, I'm a beginner as well, and it's the first time I comment on anybody's work ever.

So I hope it'll be constructive and helpful feedback for you :P

Super Imposed Lines

You took the time to place your pen correctly for most of the time, so it's always starting from the same point for each line. I think you could take just a bit more patience so it really matches up (sometimes it feels like you rushed your lines more than other times, talking about this here https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/1585f266.jpg ).

Overall I still think you took your time with the homework and were patient, nice!

Ghosted Lines

Same thing, but this time you seemed to be more patient: Pretty much every time your lines starts directly on top of a dot, which is very good. Your accuracy seems fine to me as well, the only thing I notice is that there's still some wobbliness in your lines. It feels like you're not really confident when you draw the line. Perhaps you could ghost it a few more times before you actually draw it, and/or try to change the speed a bit? From my perspective, it seems like you're sometimes speeding up and sometimes slowing down, hence the wobbliness. Try to pay more attention to the speed.

This is mainly for the 1st and 2nd page, your 3rd page of Ghost Lines seems way more confident already! So I think you are on the right way.

I'm not 100% sure if I'm right with all of that tho, I'd prefer if somebody else could correct it or agree with me :P

Ghost Planes

Nothing new to say about the squares, since they are like ghosted lines. Still feeling sliii~iiightly wobbly/unconfident to me, but getting better and better!

Your ellipses seem fine to me as well, nailing the marks on the side of the square pretty well. Perhaps you could take some more time to ghost the ellipse when it is more stretched out, but overall I think they're quite good!

Tables of Ellipses

In my opinion they vary too much, it feels like you don't have much control over about the degree (to be fair, that's something I'm struggling with as well)

But something positive: I think you're still confident when you put the pen on the paper, since "both" ellipses line up pretty well as if it'd be only one.

Funnels

I'm not sure on which side you started. Either you started on the right side, having trouble at first lining up and then getting really good at lining the ellipses up to the center line

Or 2nd possibility: You've started on the left hand side, being patient at first but then rushing the last 3 funnels on the right side :P

What I try to say is: I think you hit the center line pretty good, just the 3 funnels on the right are quite off.

Besides that, I think funnels are quite difficult, so well done!

Boxes, Boxes, Boxes (everything onwards + conclusion)

My conclusion falls into the last part, since you'll move on to the 250 boxes next.

Overall, I think you are on a good path. You seem motivated, still tend to somewhat rush sometimes, but that's completely normal in my opinion. I'm happy to see that you enjoy this path of "how to learn to draw" so much!

As you said by yourself, I think the 250 boxes challenge will help you a lot with three dimensional space. Go ahead and have fun with it! I think you are ready for it.

My advice is to spend a few extra seconds on ghosting your lines for the boxes to get more confident and accurate. Also you should try to imagine a box in your mind, think about how you stay in front of it.

How far is it away? How high is it? How tall?...

Then pick one of those questions, and start experimenting.

Let the box be further away, or contrary. Make it smaller, make it bigger! What happens if you look up at it? What happens if you look down at it ? How do the lines change?

Take one by one, whatever you have fun with. That'd be my approach, but of course it's totally open to you and I'm not even sure if this is a good advice, so beware :P

I hope you can take something useful out of this! Have a great day and a great time drawing! I'm looking forward to your stuff ^w^

Next Steps:

Start with the 250 boxes challenge, paying extra attention to your line quality as well as aspects of a box, e.g. which lines are parallel, how do the lines of a box change when you move it up or downwards from the viewer...

Thank you so much for such a detailed critique! I honestly expected nothing like this for my first submission, and now I feel more motivated than ever go to go on. Are you just starting out on Drawabox as well? I would love to discuss or critique each other's work!

Hey there! Sorry for the late reply

I'm happy to hear it's motivating you! Now that I see how much you enjoyed the critique, I'm as well motivated to continue doing this (as well as drawing on my own)

I've first started using Drawabox ~1-2 years ago, but I always started and stopped, stated and stopped, and whenever I started again, I started from the beginning.

So in other words: I've been doing Lesson 1 a few times now

But this time, I really want to stick to it, in the right order, and I hoped that being active part of the community will make it easier for me to stay motivated x3

Sure, I'd love to discuss and critique each other's work~

I understand your pain. I just came back from a break myself. I hope you've stuck around or come back also!

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
