Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
2:34 PM, Friday February 5th 2021
Hi guys, this is my first homework submission for drawabox. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance.
Hi! Starting with your lines exercises. I can see you've taken care over where you're starting your lines, and they're drawn confidently without wobbles, which is good! Some of your lines in the ghosted lines exercise are arcing a little, so refer back to this if that's a problem for you. Finally, though it only happened occassionally - try not to draw over lines that have gone awry.
Regarding your ellipses... I don't think I have anything to criticise actually. The accuracy on the whole is good and you seem to have followed the instructions exactly as they were designed. Well done!
Finally your boxes. In rough perspective, some of the lines are a bit wobbly, so remember to always draw confidently. Again, don't draw over lines even if they're inaccurate. Your organic perspective boxes are honestly pretty good at this stage, perspective-wise.
Overall, this is a pretty impressive first lesson, and I have no doubt you're ready for the 250 box challenge. Just keep an eye on the little mistakes you made here. Well done!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review my homework Cynsh!
I'll be sure to pay attention to the points you mentioned here in the future. I can totally see how I did arc some of my ghosted lines and lacked confidence in my rough perspective boxes. I'll especially take care not to draw over bad lines again (I guess I just couldn't help myself!).
Again, thank you so much for putting in the time and effort into critiquing my work. I feel really excited for the 250 box challenge now!
Pretty solid, however it looks like you are drawing very hard from these exercises; you need to make sure you are keeping your arm relaxed when you draw, making sure you are drawing from the shoulder with confidence.
Next Steps:
Go on to the 250 box challenge next. Be sure to include some of these exercises in your warm ups before doing future homework, and make sure to draw gentler.
A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.
In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
