What’s up,JARJINGBING. I’m Swampat and I’ll be doing your lesson 1 critique.

Also, next time please organize your imgur next time you submit your assignments and your camera rotated some of your images as well.

Lines

Superimposed Lines

You did decently on these, though the larger lines do arch and fray out a little more than the shorter lines. Your curved and wavy lines aren’t really required, but your curved lines are pretty well done.

I think you might need to practice moving your whole arm in your free time and focus on trying to keep lines as straight as possible.

Ghosted Lines

You didn’t do amazing on these honestly… You need to really make sure you’re confident that you’re gonna hit those dots. This is a common issue that people have and for the most part your lines are smooth.

I think you just struggle with those longer lines staying smooth, since those are the ones that miss their mark the most.

Two lines on your page have attempted fixing of missed lines/wobbly lines. You don’t need to fix lines that miss their mark or that wobble a lot. Just let the mistakes go and move on.

Make sure when you move your arm, that you’re as confident as possible before you let it rip. Also make sure you rotate your page if you’re having any trouble moving your arm. You should do some warm ups with ghosting when you’re about to do an assignment or draw, just so you can get to the point that it feels natural.

Ghosted Planes

Your planes are done very well for the most part, but some of your lines curve or wobble a little bit. For your planes, it might be because how close the planes are to one another. The ones that hit the edge of the pages suffer the most from that problem.

Your inside lines suffer to intersect correctly, but this is a common issue for most people so nothing to worry about for now.

Nothing to really add for advice aside from practicing arm movement in your free time.

Ellipses

Table of Ellipses

You did decently on these, but a few of your ellipses are a little wobbly and rushed looking. I think the quality of most ellipses you did are done well enough though. Just need to practice doing some ellipses when you do warm ups.

Aside from some of your ellipses being a little rushed looking and wobbling a bit. You did fine on these, just make sure to practice those circular arm movements in your free time.

Ellipses in Planes

Your ellipses still suffer from the rushed and wobbly look to them. Drawing larger ellipses is pretty hard and you did decent on most of your ellipses anyways.

Your ellipses should touch each side of the plane that they’re inside of, which means their shape will change to be able to fit inside of the plane. Your thinner planes and ellipses actually do a fairly good job doing that, but the wider or more angled(?) your plane gets, the more they miss touching all 4 sides.

I don’t feel like you need to redo any of these despite what I said, but I just want you to be aware of what you need to pay attention to when doing an assignment like this.

Funnels

I’m seeing that you put small arrows, checkmarks, and x’s inside your ellipses. It’s fine if your ellipses poke out a little bit from the funnels. Just like the ellipses in planes assignment, that “mistake” is common and most people accidentally undershoot or overshoot their ellipses.

Moving on to the quality of your ellipses, they are pretty wobbly and I feel that you go over them a few too many times. You did a good job keeping them aligned with the minor axis.

Speaking of the minor axis, it’s supposed to cut through the middle of the funnel so it’s easier to see where the middle of the funnel is.

This is a nitpick, but I would have liked to see your ellipses get bigger the further they get away from the minor axis (this wasn’t required to do if I remember correctly).

One last thing, that funnel on the left looks like you either tried making it wider after you did your ellipses? You didn’t have to do that, it’s fine if your ellipses overshoot from the funnel. Just acknowledge your mistake and move on. Also some of your funnels have one side that has more ellipses than the other side.

You did fine on this assignment, but remember that most of the mistakes you made are pretty minor and common. I practiced doing ellipses every time I was about to draw or do an assignment and still made the same mistakes you did.

Boxes

Plotted Perspective

You technically did this assignment correctly, but did you use a ruler or straight edge for this assignment? Some of your boxes look like you tried to freehand them because the lines are wobbly and a few boxes have lines that you tried to fix. Using a ruler would have made it so you wouldn’t have to try to redo lines.

The other issue I have with this assignment is the lines that go back to the horizon line. Using a ruler would make it so all the lines go back to the same (or almost the same) point on the horizon line.

I would like you to redo this assignment making sure you use a ruler or some kind of straight edge so you don’t have to try fixing any lines that wobble since a straight edge should mitigate any kind of wobbling. Make sure the lines that go back to the points you mark on the horizon line hit those points. If you don’t have a straight edge of some sort, make sure to let me know, maybe I can come up with some way you can make something that has a straight edge.

Rough Perspective

You did good on this assignment aside from the lines wobbling a little bit. Also remember you don’t have to fix your messed up lines, just move on.

Something unrelated to the assignment itself… your phone rotated the picture of your assignment so it’s a little hard to look at without me turning my laptop to the side.

Rotated Boxes This assignment is supposed to be hard so this’ll be short

You actually did good on this! Your lines are still a bit wobbly, but you still were able to draw the boxes pretty well at different angles. I do have a few things to point out, but they’re small mistakes so it’s not too much of a problem.

The second set of boxes on top going horizontally don’t rotate as well as all the other boxes you drew. The boxes on the bottom rotate fairly well and so does the set at the very top, but the second set above the middle set stays in a front facing perspective. I’ll make sure to add a picture of what I’m talking about. https://imgur.com/a/nsTflb7

I don’t feel that you need to redo this assignment despite the stuff I pointed out, but I just want to make sure you’re aware of what you made mistakes on.

Organic Perspective This one is also pretty hard, but this may be a bit longer(?)

You did really well on these too, in fact, most of my critiques for this assignment will be nitpicks.

I think you could have made the boxes that get closer a bit bigger and use darker lines.

I think a few of your boxes don’t change their angle enough, as in they lack angle variety and some boxes look like they stay in the same perspective for 3 or so boxes.

The last thing is that your phone rotated the pictures of the assignment again.

*These last two assignments are extremely difficult, but you did very well on this and the rotated boxes assignment. The mistakes you made on this are common mistakes that people make so nothing to worry about at this point. Also PLEASE make sure your phone doesn’t rotate your assignment pictures. I do not enjoy rotating my laptop.

Final Thoughts

Your main issue is that your lines are wobbly. You can just practice putting smooth and straight lines when you do warm ups.

You don’t need to fix messed up lines. Most of the time trying to fix those messed up lines just makes the mistakes worse.

Practice moving your arm as a warmup. Do ghosted lines, ellipses, and wavy lines before drawing or doing an assignment. You’ll get used to the movements much faster if you do this.

I’d like you to redo the plotted perspective assignment with a ruler or some kind of hard straight edge. Remember to make the lines that go back to the points on the horizon line hit those points so they don’t go over the horizon line and make everything look all messy.
