Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
12:08 PM, Friday October 23rd 2020
i've bought a new sketchbook and will continue lesson 2 and the 250 box challenge with the new sketchbook.
So please take all of this with a grain of salt as I just completed lesson 1 myself =] So here are the things I noticed:
Superimposed Lines
For these, for the first page its hard to tell what your lines look like cause you go over the ends of them with your wavy lines. On the second page, it looks like you do good with starting the lines out at one spot but the fraying seems to be a bit exagerated for some of them and the lines are very wobbly. I think some of this might be due to the fact you were only supposed to go over the initial line 8 times...some of these look like you went over them like 15+ times.
Ghosted Lines
I think your ghosted lines look pretty good. Again I see some wobbles at the end of your longer lines. I had trouble with that too. THe longer the line the harder it was for me to keep it straight without a bow in it. I think this is where the tip of drawing from the shoulder comes into play.
Ghosted Planes & Elipses
I think your ghosted lines and planes look very good and again confident. I don't see much as much wobbeling in your lones in these. They seem more configent. Only thing i would say is for your ellipses, they state to only go around 2-3 times for them. Some of them you went around quite a few times.
Table of Ellipses
So this one, I think your second page looks better than you first. The first one looks like you were in a hurry and you didn't fill in the all the space like the exercise asked you too. On the first page the very right bottom section isn't even filled up with ellipses.
Funnels
I think your funnels look good. Again, for the ellipses just go around 2-3 times to form the ellipses. Some of these go around a lot of times.
Plotted & Rough Perspective
I think your plotted & rough perspectives look very nice and clean.
Rotated Boxes
This one also looks good. Again the only thing i would mention is it looks like on the top the boxes all kind of swing to the left some instead of being more in alignment. Kind of skews the circular effect and makes it look more ovalish instead.
Organic Perspective
I think these look really good. Only thing i would mention is exaggerating the concept of the larger in front and smaller as they travel back in distance. you're lines are nice and confident no wobbles.
Keep up the good work!
Next Steps:
I would like to see 1 more page of superimposed lines just the straight ones where you only go over the line 8 times and focus on the fraying. Try to make the lines more confident and less wobbly.
Also, 1 more page of the table of ellipses. Try to focus on filling the space and only going around the ellipses 2-3 times instead of several. Revisit the lesson where it mentions that all the ellipses should share the same direction as well.

i hope these are better, i still made the mistake of turning my ellipses when corners get tight, i can draw them from my elbow but i can't draw small from my shoulder, is this something that after practice will improve or is the elbow style of drawing just inherently bad at drawing small things?
i had major improvement with the lines but i'll have to implement the ellipses into my warm up.
i'm already done with the 250 boxes, should i upload those today or is there a limit on how often i can upload homework?
also: i really like your critique, it was as if uncomfy himself critiqued my work, thanks for that.
have a good day
Dude! your lines are 100% better! so much cleaner and straight!!! perfect! your ellipses are a lot better as well but I see that you still went around more then 2-3 times but...they look a lot better! good job on the rework! thanks for the feedback on the review :) I'm marking you complete this looks really good!!! I know this stuff takes a lot of time so thank you for taking the time to redo! shows your seriousness and dedication!
Next Steps:
Since you have your 250 boxes done definitely submit them for review! I still haven't completed mine! they are taking me forever haha
yeah i'm obsessed with drawing lol,
thanks for your feedback, if you want we can exchange some sort of contact details so we can critique each other more often.
the 250 boxes took me forever too!
i actually really liked the boxes since it is so repetitive, lesson 2 is something completely different and i disliked lesson 2 more than the boxes, things really get going after lesson 2 because then you move on from drawing exercises to drawing constructional studies of plants insects and arachnids.
i wish you a lot of good luck!
This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.
I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.
No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
