Questions on promptathon

5:45 AM, Monday March 24th 2025

I wanna take on the promptathon, since I've missed my chance in the autumn season, so I wanna try it. I do have a few questions and I don't want to look like an idiot when doing the promptathon.

Timezones: Since no one is bounded to one timezone, I wanna know what time the promptathon starts. (The time zone on when the promptathon starts) Since it starts tomorrow. (for me at least)

Posting: Is it necessary to have discord to earn the badge and achievements as well? And where do we post the Artworks from the prompts?

The final question is how will the promptathon start? Like the website will update to give us the prompts?

These are the questions that I think are relevant to ask. I'm sorry for asking many questions, but there doesn't seem to be any specific rules/instructions to promptathon like the lessons. That's why I'm asking these questions that I think are relevant.

Give this a read. It has the answers for your other questions.

I'm sure you don't need Discord for the badges/achievements since you can see it here in the website.

As for the timezone, I can't say for sure. If you join the Discord server you can click the calendar icon and it will show you Spring 2025 Promptathon. You'll see what time the event will start in your timezone. You just have to click Interested so you can get notified.

Timezones: Promptathon starts at 12AM (midnight) UTC. So whatever timezone you're in (as represented by a + or a - and a number of hours), you can add or subtract that number of hours from midnight. Alternatively, from roughly the time this comment is posted, it starts in 12 hours.

Posting: This is explained in the announcement, here.

Discord: As LLBR11 noted, being on the Discord isn't required, but it can make it easier to realize that there's no specific expectation of quality for what we're drawing for this event. We're all just interpreting the prompts however, and producing whatever we can - and often it's silly nonsense.

How does it start: The drawabox home page will change to show the promptathon prompts where the "start your journey today" banner currently sits. It'll also move the sketchbook posts higher up and give them more room, since that's where promptathon posts will ultimately go, and homework will be pushed to the bottom.

I am thankful.

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something we've used ourselves, or know to be of impeccable quality. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. I'm especially fond of this one for sketching and playing around with, and it's what I used for the notorious "Mr. Monkey Business" video from Lesson 0. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.

I would not recommend this for Drawabox - we use brush pens for filling in shadow shapes, and you do not need a pen this fancy for that. If you do purchase it, save it for drawing outside of the course.
