My original attempts at Lesson 2 from almost a decade ago ...

This was from the first time I made an effort to complete this course. I didn't follow key rules:

  • No grinding

  • 50% rule

  • GET FEEDBACK

I attempted to do it all entriely on my own, and without official submissions. My linework was really poor (I wasn't drawing from my shoulder). I have drawn on and off a lot since then (October 2017) but I picked back up on drawabox officially about a year or so ago January 2024. Getting official and unofficial critiques, adhering to the 50% rule have made A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT. Also I feel that the course itself has grown a lot since then as well which is awesome.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. I'm especially fond of this one for sketching and playing around with, and it's what I used for the notorious "Mr. Monkey Business" video from Lesson 0. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.

I would not recommend this for Drawabox - we use brush pens for filling in shadow shapes, and you do not need a pen this fancy for that. If you do purchase it, save it for drawing outside of the course.

Remember that when you agree with something another user has written, you are putting your own reputation behind it.

Consider the following:

  • If it's homework feedback, does it address each section of the lesson/challenge, or only briefly touch upon one or two exercises?
  • Does it provide clearly defined next steps for the student to follow?
  • Have you read through it thoroughly, or are you simply agreeing so the student earns a superficial badge?
  • Replies you agree with will be visible in your sketchbook

Agreeing blindly just to be nice is a good way to get your permissions associated with this function revoked, so make sure that you genuinely feel that the response is beneficial to the student.
