Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
9:33 AM, Saturday August 28th 2021
Hi, drawabox community! Was wondering if I could get feedback for this lesson - any and all are very much appreciated!
Superimposed lines:
+Overall looks pretty good, the fraying are a bit substantial but that's something you'll get better with time no worries.
Ghosted Lines:
+One thing to keep in mind here is that smooth confident flow are the main priority here, once you execute a mark you'll have to commit to it,no hesitation,no second guessing yourself, take your time ghosting and just do it with confident, hitting the mark is secondary.
Ellipses in planes+in table:
+I goto say, these are some nice ellipses m8,however you're more focus about fitting them inside the planes than executing a clean stroke confidently,as mention above fitting them inside the planes is not as important as maintaining a smooth elliptical shape.
Funnels:
+Make sure the degree of your ellipses are shifting outward from the center.
Boxes:
+All four of your exercise on this sections are really good, nice box with good line quality,no common mistakes, the only thing i'll point out is that you're doin clean up passes on some of your boxes, this is why they look wobbly and hesitant.
+when applying line weight you should always treat those lines the same way as with any other line, taking the time to prepare using the ghosting method.
+Also be subtle with your line wieght, some of them are really thicc when compared to the rest.
Next Steps:
Move on to the 250 box challenge.
+Be sure to continue doin these exercise as future warm ups.
Alright, this is noted! Thanks for the critique :D
Congrats on finishing lesson 1. I hope you are well. But lets get to the critique.
For your line assignments, I can see that you are using the ghosting method very well, confident lines without wobbliness, thats a very good sign.
In your ghosted lines exercises. I see that sometimes your line arch a little. That might be caused by not using a shoulder properly or not having enough confidence in your line, but thats just a tiny little nitpick from me, good work on your part with that exercise.
WIth your ghosted plane, I can see that you are not drawing through ellipses 2 to 3 times, more on that later.
Your planes are looking good, but I would recommend varying them more in size during your warm up, doing those long lines can sometimes be tricky.
Looking at your table of ellipses these are coming along very nicely. But it does appear to me that you arent drawing through them 2 or 3 times, which is a mistake which can be fixed. Drawing through your ellipses helps you build up more experience when doing those exercises.
Plotted perspective is good, nothing to say here. Your rough perspective boxes turned out pretty well for the most. You are employing the ghosting method and getting solid linework and a great job extending your boxes back and checking your work. I'm not seeing any real issues here but there is always room for improvement.
Organic Perspective came out really well. You are rotating your boxes properly, overlapping them to create a feel of perspective. But sizes of your farther boxes are sometimes too equal in sizes, thats the only thing that catches my eyes. Your boxes itself are coming very nicely and feel solid and they are going to look even better after 250 box challenge
PS. I see that SIR_RICHY already critiqued(and these are great points) , but I wrote mine a few hours ago and went to do some other stuff so it would be wasteful for me to not post it.
Next Steps:
Move on to the 250 box challenge.
Adress those things during your warmups
thank you so much for the critique!! :D
A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.
In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
