Lesson 2: Contour Lines, Texture and Construction
11:40 AM, Saturday August 12th 2023
Please note that I drew these before getting critique on my 250 box submission, so some mistakes made in that submission might also be found here.
Hello there I am quat and I am going to critique you and before we begin I want to say that I think you could have made it so every exercise is in the same file rather than in the same folder, but anyway
First of all the organic arrows exercise: your lines are fairly confident and you seem to handle perspective really well for the most part, I have nothing to say here except well done.
Secondly organic forms with counter lines: in the page with counter Ellipses your forms are simple and you drew through the eclipses and made sure to change the degree of the ellipse which is good, for the curves you did a good job, there are some Ellipses and curves that are floating but it isn't really a big deal, I just wanted to point it out so it doesn't become a problem later.
Thirdly texture: for the texture analysis you did a good job you started with crumbled paper and you transitioned from dark to light really well, as for the dissections exercise you did a great job with drawing the cast shadow of most of your textures, it is not overwhelming for the most part and it is pleasant to look at.
Fourthly form intersection exercise at the beginning it seems like you struggled with the exercise and making the forms intersect visibility but the problem seems to be fixed.
Lastly organic intersection exercise you handled shadows pretty well and the forms are well drawn.
Next Steps:
You should start with lesson 3
Hello Quat, thank you for the critique! I'm not sure if I'll be able to get all of my images in one big file without any loss of quality on my device, but I will look into it.
Your critique was clear and easy to understand, I'll make sure to incorporate the organic forms more often in my warmups. You're right about me struggling a bit with the forms intersection also, I didn't really know how to draw them at first but I got the hang of it later. Have a nice day!
A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.
On the flipside, they tend to be on the cheaper side of things, so if you're just getting started (beginners tend to have poor pressure control), you're probably going to destroy a few pens - going cheaper in that case is not a bad idea.
In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
