This is my first attempt into learning how to draw. My workspace is not ideal so there are a lot of mistakes in boxes that are placed far from the center of the sheet.

I have tried my best to not correct my errors but I have failed many times when i saw the drawing too awful.

Hi! I’ve looked at your work and here are some of my thoughts:

Lines: overall I think you did a nice job here, the fraying of the lines is only on one side of the super imposed lines, and your ghosted lines technique gained accuracy through the exercises, you can see it in the ghosted planes. Well done!

Ellipses: You can keep the orientation of your ellipses quite consistent, though sometimes it’s a bit different from one to another. I can see you’re applying the technique to draw the ellipse as requested, but the shape of the ellipses is not always regular and smooth as it should be so you may want to try some more to build confidence in the stroke. The accuracy wasn’t bad either, and it will improve more when the shapes improve.

Boxes: here I think that you did the exercises according to the request and fulfilling their purpose. Inaccuracies are to be expected in most of these, so the only thing i can say is: try to really focus on where your strokes are going when planning them. Here the ghosting method helps a lot in choosing the most accurate inclination of your lines according to the chosen vanishing point. In the rotated box you applied a rotation to your boxes, well done, but they’re not very consistent in terms of dimension, and some of them have a bad deformation (especially at the corners). Overall I’d say you got the point of the exercises, but the construction of the boxes in relation of this task can be improved. The organic perspective seems fine by me, I wouldn’t add much.

As I suggested to others, I would recommend if you haven’t already done so to watch the review linked at the end of lesson 1 (https://youtu.be/5cciOw9z6IU) so that you can follow a full review and compare your homework to the one you see there.

Here is all, I hope I’ve been helpful. I would suggest you to practice a little more your ellipses and maybe give the rotated boxes another try, to try and get those corners right. Other than this you’re fine, keep it up!

Next Steps:

You could do another round at the table of ellipses, and focus on having a smooth stroke. Remember to try to build the movement from your shoulder.

You could try again the rotated boxes, I know it's a pain but I think it will benefit you if you focus on getting those boxed a bit more accurate.

Watch the review i mentioned before trying again these exercises, because maybe you can apply some of the things they point out there.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you for your feedback.

I have seen an improvement in the rotated boxes (just on the corners). I'm still struggling on the basics so if i failed while drawing a line that i need as reference for the adjacent box that error compounds with the following and after a few boxes I have no reliable references around. This attempt i focused the most on the faces of the boxes that form the globe.

I don't think the same way of my ellipses; when I draw them fast they are smooth but more than ellipses are spiral, if I draw them slow the second stroke is more accurate but more bumpy.

Nice work! Honestly I think you improved a lot in both your rotated boxes and ellipses. It's more noticeable in the boxes of course, but still, your ellipses are better than last time. It's ok if they're not perfect, you'll get better and better with the accuracy of the stroke over time. Also it's a good thing that you're seeing what you can improve in both these ecercises (it's good that you analyzed your ellipses), keep those things in mind when you draw. I think now that the 250 box challenge will further develop your ability with boxes, while maybe you could do some ellipses from time to time as warmups, trying to focus on getting confident in the motion of creating a clean result. Anyway really good job! ( That ellipse with the crown is really best ellipse :D )

Next Steps:

The 250 box challenge should be the suggested next step, good luck!

Hello,

I agree with the previous critique. Just one small remark from my side – each line should be drawn only once, regardless of how it turns out. Drawing one more ‘correct’ line ‘over’ the previous one does not fix it; it just makes it stand out more. Try to avoid it.

Overall, the submission is good and redo exercises showed that you have learned a lot from the critique. Keep it up! I’ll go to mark “agree”.

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
