Please critique!
Hello, I hope you're having a wonderful day. My names Saif and I will be going over the critique for your 250 boxes challenge homework submission.
Make sure to use the ghosting technique with all your hatch lines, yes I know it can be a bit annoying, I understand that, but it's necessary that you get as comfortable as you can with the technique since ghosting is going to be used for pretty much every line you draw in drawabox.
Make sure that the hatch lines you are drawing stay within the confines of the side facing the viewer, it should not float inside it nor should it go outside. This can be a bit hard to control at the start but it gets better with practice.
The hatching you add should have equal distance, always try your best to ensure that the hatching you add does have areas where its very dense and areas where its very sparse; My tip for you would be to add hatching thats around the same amount as box number 25.
Line commitment: Be bold and commit to your decisions, when drawing a line remember that its a decision you have made, you made that decision clear by adding dots and then using the ghosting method to make one confident line. Don't undermine that decision by trying to fix it once it done and try your best to work with what you have. Fixing a line by adding more lines in that area would actually have a negative effect and result in that mistake being more highlighted rather than hidden.
Check lines: I noticed at at times you didn't draw all the check lines for your box.
Not using the shoulder: I also saw at at times you used your wrist instead of your shoulder which resulted in really curved lines.
And thats pretty much it for the critique.
Next Steps:
You are free to move on to lesson 2 of drawabox. I am not assigning you revisions, however the problems I did highlight are things you should work on. I want you to do the organic perspective exercise with the back corner drawn as well as Rotated boxes as part of your warmups. Make sure to take extra care and keep things I highlighted in mind when doing so. I would also like to remind you that moving on it's recommended that you use fine liners if you can, since you are on the community critique route you can choose not too but it's recommended that you do. Anyways congratulations on tackling the behemoth that is the 250 boxes challenge!!
Thank you so much! My hatching was definitely something I should’ve put more effort into and I do have line commitment and shoulder issues from my past bad habits. Check lines were also due to the fact that sometimes I rushed to do the line extensions. Thank you so much for your critique. I will do what you have described. Have a wonderful day saif/friendly_neighbour!
This is one of my favourite books. It's a fantasy-comedy romp, and the world that J. Zachary Pike has created honestly takes my breath away. There are laughs at every turn, but the story is not without its heart wrenching moments - some for which I have yet to fully forgive the author.
If you're at all curious about the kinds of nonsense I read, or just need something new to sink your teeth into, this is one I can highly recommend. On top of that, being self-published by an indie author, it's the kind of thing where your individual support can go a long way.
P.S: The audiobook, with narration from Doug Tisdale, is especially good, and elevates the story in ways I can't rightly describe.
